Speed and Megabit/bytes???

Have you ever wondered if PCI is now 32bit or 64 bit, or whether AGP is 128bit or 64bit or is it 32bit???
What about speed. If PCI is 132 is that 132 MegaBYTES per second or 132MegaBITS per second. Does anyone know for SURE!!! I have read numerous books on the subject and all of them seem to disagree. Some may even mean MegaBIT but write it as MB meaning instead of Mb.

Well, a 'bit' is one digit of data in time. Period. Its either a logic '1' or a logic '0' and correlates to a high voltage or a low voltage state.

A byte is a data word of 8 'bits' This is the standard. 1MB=1024x1024'BYTES'. Or 1024x1024x8 bits.

To ******** the question further, the PCI speed is in clock cycles, ie 'Mega-Hertz' or million cycles per second. The pci Bus freq is normally a standard of 66Mhz.

The Data path used in video cards is internally 128 'bits' wide, as opposed to 32 bits wide for the ide devices or etc. This does not refer to data rate of the pci bus.

Most pci data rates end up being up to or higher than 1000Mb/s even though the bus is moving 32bits per clock cycle times 2 for double data rate and etc...


In other words its all relative and mostly abused by advertising departments of manufacturers and not necessarily based on measured units.

yeah colossus77, aint it frustrating how nobody is consistent, so you don't know for sure if its megabit or megabyte.

then the hd manufacturer's have their slanted version of 1mbyte.

and modems kilobit is 1000, not 1024 (or is that kilobyte. case in point i guess).

also some guys like to post in all caps and then you have no clue which one they meant.
