I posted this on tech support but I didn't solve it yet and I'm hopeful that it's a WinXP thing that needs adjustment.
I'm having a problem with a new computer. It's a P4, 1024 RAM, SATA 120gig, WindowsXP Professional, which seems to run things very quickly except for this nagging problem. I have some folders which contain several thousand graphics data files each on D:\ drive on this computer. When I open a program (such as Adobe Illustrator) and click "open file" and go to one of these folders I see a list of the contents displayed but I cannot scroll through the folder for 20 or 30 seconds or more. It appears that the computer has to identify each file and change the little icon next to it from a default icon to the thumbnail image icon for that file. I created these files over several years using a Windows98 computer and that computer allows me to scroll and choose any file without waiting for the thumbnail to pop up. Is someone familiar with this problem and adjustments I could make to speed things up? I don't really care to see a thumbnail if I could get rid of them all together that would solve my problem or else just make it like Win98 so that I can scroll and choose without waiting. I have all Windows, AV, and Ad-aware up-dates. I have tried adjusting file indexing, folder properties but no joy. Thank you

I did something awhile back about this but not sure I have the rite fix to at least make the thumbs come up faster, rite clik my computer/properties to advanced tab/performance/settings advanced tab and select system cache in memory usage see if that makes a difference could also tik programs in processor scheduling above it if you want to experiment a little more.

You can always change your view setting to either Tiles, Icons, List, or Details. Instead of using Thumbnails.

I just opened my wallpaper folder which is 156mg in photoshop 7 set them as thumbs and there was no delay scrolling thru all the pics, my machine is just an 1800xp with 512 ram, his machine should be opening just as fast. Did you try what I mentioned above yet?

I can see a delay when you first start your machine and use win explorer to view the folder for the first time but after that it should scroll easy.

Thank you for all your suggestions. The problem was with a utility program within Coreldraw12 Suite which allows thumbnail views of each graphics file. In their knowledge base system I found the following entry which solves my problem and allows me to scroll through my folders quickly.

>When thumbnail display is enabled, it may take longer to open a file as each thumbnail in a folder has to load.

Answer
To remove the thumbnail display, do the following:

1. Go to the Add\Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
2. Select CorelDRAW 12, then highlight Change.
3. Select Modify and click Next.
4. Click the plus sign beside Utilities.
5. Click the down arrow beside Thumbnail Display (CDR/CPT) and choose 'This feature will not be available'.
6. Click Install.
7. Click Finish.

I also found this exchange in a Microsoft newsgroup. I sure am glad I didn't have to go to this much time and trouble. This guy spent months trying everything this microsoft tech guy asked him to do only to end up still having to wait to browse his files.
