Have a 486/with a Fugutech motherboard, and a 83 mhz pentium overdriver. Getting alot of lock ups and can't seem to get the overdriver to stay at a fixed speed. ranges from 80 to 100????
still have the old 66 mhz cpu.I have no info on the overdriver, not even sure how to set the thing. Got the pc from a friend , would like to get some info on the overdriver. Or maybe I should put the old 66 mhz back on and try and overclock it..would it be possible...??????????? what are my options.
thanks

possibly you are getting lockups because the overdrive is using nonstandard bus speed (unless its using a PR rating system).

you could try overclocking the 66 if it has a nice heat sink/fan.

overall, that system is getting a bit old, and i wouldn't spend much money on trying to soup it up. if you just want stable, then plop that 66 back in and see if you can even notice a speed difference.

Thats what I figured...Not going to spend anymoney on it...maybe some edo ram or something...but , will put the 66 back in and use it...know of any good sights for overclocking a 486??66 mhz?
thanks

actually, i've never tried to o'c a 486, but if the clock multiplier works the same as a pentium, then maybe you could hope for 90, 99 (100)? you have more options if your mb has 75, 83 bus speeds, but i think that's what was causing lockups in the first place. the 74 bus speed might work though. all depends on what your mb supports.

486 cpu's can usually be o/c'd. Since you have a 66mhz chip, your bus is probably running at 33mhz. DX2 cpu were clock doublers, thus giving you 66mhz. Some 486 m/b's allowed you to o/c to 40mhz, thus this would give you around 80mhz. If your willing to spend about $20, go get yourself an old AMD 486-DX5 133 cpu. With this chip had a multiplier of 4x. Back around 1994 I used to kick a DX5 up to 160 mhz on a 40mhz m/b. This was actually faster than my friends pentium 100.

The Bad thing about this system is the motherboard..made by "Fugutech" which I can't even get any info about...seems there is a listing on the board of where to put the jumpers for what kind of cpu you are going to use...currently I am using an Intel DX2 66 mhz and have the jumpers set to that processor. As for trying to overclock it, there aren't many options , since I have no information about this MB.But still seem to be getting a lock up , every so often. To be honest I think this MB is a piece of ****.

Most often these overdrive 486 CPU,s are based on the AMD 133 chip. They include an on chip regulator to lower the older M.B.'s 5Volts to the AMD's rated 3.5V. Most MB's do not support the 3.5Volts.
If the case supports a baby AT style Board your best bet might be a MB, CPU, Mem, VidCard, H.D.? upgrade. My, how one thing leads to another!
Look for a brand name MB (to ensure future support), An IBM/Cyrix 300 (a good value), and at least 32MB of memory.
Check PriceWatch for the best prices.
GOOD LUCK!
