Probably a pretty boring question for this page, but.... Recently my computer has become extremely slow at closing Exel files (20 - 30 seconds for a simple, 1 page file). I often have 10 or so of these files open at once. The computer is not a terribly new one (~P166) and an 86% free 32 MB RAM. I have checked for viruses with a recent virus program. I have also gotten rid of old temporary files, and have gotten rid of everything in my recycle bin (I do so fairly regularly).

Thanks a ton!!!! for any helpful suggestions!!

I assume you defrag regularly.

Your using Office97 or Excel97, along with Outlook97.

Are you using version SR1 or SR2.

Check it out now if your not sure. .

Open Excel and go to the Help tab and select About. Does it read SR1 or SR2(f) after the product name at the top.

If not, you ought to update Excel and Word, if your using it. They both go to SR2.
-Same download file.-
If you don't have SR1, which should be the case because your program is having this weirdness, you'll have to patch with SR1 first then SR2.

If your using the entire Office Suite, there's probably one patch for everything. I'm not certain about this because I've only installed the Excel and Word components, then updated them.

However..the cause is said to be (from MS KBase) Outlook automatically creating journal entries for these programs by default.

The work around is to disable this.

1. Start Microsoft Outlook.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. Click the Journal tab.
4. In the "Also record files from" list, clear all of the check boxes.
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.

This has been fixed in SR1.

Patch the programs anyhow.

Off hand, I don't know what else it might be but it's a start -yes?
