Does anyone know anything about altavista's free internet offer? Whats the catch? I am highly suspicious about this. How the hell could anything be 100% free??. This is America after all. Home of Capitalism.

Supposedly just like TV. There is a banner with information on your screen, plus they ask you to give them additional information about yourself....to "specifically taylor information" you may be interested in.

the way they offer the free internet is the same way freeinet, netzero, and all the other ones do - they make you open up an ad banner and keep it on your desktop the whole time you are on the internet. the advertisers pay them to put their ads up, which pays for the internet access. a friend of mine has been using one of these services for about 3 months now, and he's relatively happy with it - considering its free....

I've got it too. It's better than AOL by a long shot. Just remember to make sure that you aren't using a long distance number or else it won't be "free". I would use NetZero too except there are no local numbers for me.

Another thing the others didn't mention about Alta Vista is that there is a timer visible and before the timer runs out you must make some kind of response to the ads or services in the banner. I always check the news.

Yo, drdeath, what are the other free internet services? Where can I find out about freeinet?

One other point on AltaVista,When the timer runs down click on anything-BUT it is not nessesary to let the page load, x the page out as soon as it appears an the timer resets.

Takes about a second.

Just get NETZERO you don't have to click on any of the ads ever!!

Most of the time it is more reliable than my M$N (microsoft network)

the freeinet web site is http://www.freei.net

its basically the same as netzero and such, except that I believe it is only available in the Seattle, WA area (thats where I live, so thats how I know about it...)

On Altavista's free internet, They monitor your visits to pages in order to better suit your needs with the banners.
This is kinda neat, but im not comfortable wit someone peering over my shoulder every time Im online. Id recommend netzero for free ones..cuz they have a plethora of access numbers and a nice setup.
