despite repeated attempts w98 refuses to recognize my modem. it is initially detected as "PCI serial controller" and will not load any drivers (cd or w98). actually never used my pci slots before, just agp and isa. happens on abit and asus boards. did i inadvertently disable pci slots somehow? (bios?). modem in ? is creative "modem blaster". computer detects my supraexpress isa modem fine. any thoughts welcome........

Here is a suggestion that might work. When you saw the name of the modem in unkown devices, double click that device and then select driver and click update driver. If this is win 98 select reinstall driver. When is asks you if you want windows to search for it say no, and then select the hardware as a modem. Then say have disk and this should work for you.

what you should do is to remove the pci device under device manager, windows should find it when it reboots, and then you could use your driver disk that came w/ the modem, lots of things like this HAVE to plug and play to work properly really. I had this same problem, it takes a while even on some disks to find the driver folder, but once you find the right .inf file, all usually goes well, winmodems are usually worse at this, if for some reason it won't plug and play, try two things...first let windows search for new hardware, under add hardware, if this doesn't work, totally take the card out, reboot, shut down, reinstall the card, and see if it will plug and play..(all after removing the pci device).. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
