Xp professional release and renew

I have a friend with XP professional and a DSL modem on it. the provider had an outage a few days ago and he can't connect again.
I suggested release and renew, but not sure how to release and renew in XP prof.

do you mean how to release and renew the IP address?

run cmd
type ipconfig /release
then type ipconfig /renew

you could also download wntipcfg
