I am buying new RAM for my puter. What does this ad mean? 16 MB FastPage/EDO Memory, 4x32. ( I do know what the 16 MB means).

most of the mem sold in that format nowadays is edo (extended data out). it has a slight perfomance benefit over plain fastpage memory. i'm pretty sure the 32 part means that the memory is not error correcting (ecc). just ignore that part.

if you talk to a vendor, or go to a store, just tell them you need 72pin EDO SIMM memory and they should be able to help you. you need to install memory in pairs of modules so if you want 16 mb total to add, you'll need two 8 mb SIMMs. memory is so cheap nowadays though, that you should seriously consider buying two 16mb SIMMs for a total of 32mb to add. you'll have to check to make sure that you have two empty SIMM slots on your motherboard. its also a good idea to check your motherboard manual for any compatibility problems.

you should also be aware that you will probably not be able to reuse this memory if you ever move to a pentium 2/3 system. if your entire system is aging, look twice at those new systems that are coming out for around $600 -- they might save you more headaches in trying to update your old system part by part.

If you have a pentium board,with 72 pin memory slots,you have to install memory in pairs.(two 16meg strips of 72 pin memory,for 32meg total).Check to see if your board has the long (128 pin) sdram slots. You can buy a 32meg strip of sdram for less than two strips of 72 pin edo.But first-check out what your board has already-try not to mix different types of memory.
