I just received Mandrake 10.0 in the mail today. We've been using it a little bit in my Operating Systems class, and I thought i'd finally give Linux a try. It installed fine, I've started to learn my way around the OS, but I've run into a problem. I can't surf the net through my other WinXP comp's proxy server. My Linux comp had Windows XP on it only about an hour ago and it could surf the net and transfer files over the network, it was working fine. But Mandrake just wont go. I've set up my IP address (192.168.0.2) and all the proxy ports and all that good stuff, but nothing's working. The network card drivers installed fine. It's a phoneline networking card, but I've never had any problems with it. I'm sure that I'm probably just doing something wrong, since afterall I've only been using Linux for about 3 hours. Any help is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

What does your default gateway show?

Sorry for the delay, I had to reinstall Mandrake a few times because I was encountering some problems. The gateway is 192.168.0.1 (IP of the computer running the proxy server). I also noticed something interesting when Mandrake is booting. Before it loads the GUI and it's starting up all the services, devices, etc, it shows "starting eth0 interface" and shows "FAILED". Does that mean that the network card couldn't connect to the network, or does that mean that the network card itself couldn't be loaded? Thanks for any help.

It means that the card drivers weren't initialized.
