very slowly gettin xp to work for me, but there are a few things in the add\remove i cant get rid of.
i have removed 'hide' in the sysoc.inf file, but the com+, distributed transaction coordinates, indexing, auto updates and wmi just will not go away! i untick them but when i go back, they are still there with a tick in the box.

i did manage to get rid of messenger, themes and a few other bits i didnt like.

thanks

somethings are system files that will automatically be reinstalled. however, you can disable the service.

go into control panel - administrative tools - services.

I don't know why you're fooling with system services if you're just learning winxp. you could seriously mess up your system.

messenger is pretty deeply imbeded.

autoupdate will be enabled by default with sp2, so I'm not sure that you could remove it.

why is disabling not enough?

if you're so hellbent on making it like win98, why even bother?

while xp is the latest out, i have never used auto update on anything, and as for error reporting ****, thats like spywear to me, if i want to tell them, i will...not have them assume i want to. explorer, outlook express, hate em.

as for bein hell bent on it looking like 98' whats wrong with a rusty body hiding a V8 motor?

but i did draw the line a bringing over the ol' 98 icons :)

He is like the time I wanted to clean up my computer>>I had Win 98 and saw this old file created in 1992 (Hymem.sys) file and deleted that old file. I learned alot from that mistake.

some things are deeply imbedded into the kernel, so it's difficult or impossible to remove. you can disable services, which is just as good as removal. you wouldn't be saving that much space if any. If you set the service to manual, then it would only start up when invoked. disabling the service prevents it from starting at all.

All I'm saying is that you need to be careful when removing/disabling things. Like Baddog said, there could be a few things that totally mess up your system if they are removed.

I've aired this before, but since you mention it; my granddaughter set up MS Messenger whilst her own computer was down. "It'll be OK gramps, you can take it out when I've finished" Oh yeah. I keep on taking it out but the pals keep coming back looking for said G/Daughter, 25, blonde and ... well Britney hates her!.
Is there a permanent way? If so I'd be delighted to hear it.

Well, I did it and the little icon wot looks like a chess pawn is no longer visible, time will tell if it really has gorn.
Posible downer, when I restarted, the IE link was very slow and google took a while to get sorted - I have just installed the all-singing, all-dancing toolbar.
Favourites took a while to come up but that might all be because it was a new setup. Fingers crossed it will be OK.
Thanks to all.
