I've downloaded the correct driver from the USR/3com site, and followed the instructions for extracting etc.
The only problem is that the thingy won't install.... when I point the hardware install to the floppy, it doesn't find anything....
Anyone got any ideas?

Yeah. Doesn't WinModems create an icon in the Control Panel? Remove the modem from there or from Systems Device Manager or the regular Windows Modem icon.
Reboot your computer and Windows will find the modem again. Then let it get the drivers off the floppy.
Better yet, remove the modem and DON'T restart and select Add modem, THEN click have disk and lead it to the floppy.

If the above doesn't help, go to the site below and do a search for

Winmodems are Bas***ds, as Bleeding Edge says there is an icon in control panel "remove Winmodem" unfortunately this doesnt always work and still leaves you with stubborn registry entries.
You can either get a Winmodem regisry remover utility from 3-com (RECOMMENDED)(if not Dells filelibrary have them under Dimension systems)
Or you can manually search your registry for entries named Winmodem and USR6006 (NOT RECOMMENDED Dont blame me!)
Let us know.

You may have already corrupted the registry, if you removed the modem from the Device Manager. Got to double-click the Winmodem icon in the Control Panel to unistall. Removing the Winmodem from the Device Manager may cause registry corruption. If that's the case, gotta do what Gx101 says and do a Find for winmodem from Regedit and delete the entries.
For now lets assume the registry is okay. What you want to do is to clear the PNP settings in the Bios (after you remove the card from Winmodem icon) so it can reassign a different IRQ and such to the PNP devices. Some Bios' have a Reset Configuration/Settings option in them. That's the best way to get those new assignments.
If there isn't such a setting...
What do you guys think?
Reset the entire Bios with the clear CMOS jumpers?
