ANTONIO E GUERRA 03-31-1999, 01:13 PM Hi, everyone! As far as I know, that bios supports plug and play. You may go to your bios and change the settings to plug and play os and pc. However, if you are using windows 3.1, you need to change the settings of your bios to non plug and play operating system. Change the Pci to Isa/Eisa so you may be able to configure with the setup disks. If not, get a cheap Yamaha OP3 soundcard (16 bit) for $10.00 There is nothing more generic than that. Good luck DavidX 03-31-1999, 05:45 PM I also have a 486 with Award v4.50G BIOS set up with Windows95 and a plug&play sound card (Vibra16). My BIOS is not a plug&play BIOS but there are simple solutions: The Vibra16 (made by Creative Labs) ships with an ISA Configuration Manager called 'CTCM' which allocates resources such as IRQ and DMA. There are versions for both DOS and Windows 3.x. Even if your card is not by Creative Labs, it should have a similar configuration utility on the installation disk. Now, as I mentioned, I use Windows 95 and CTCM does not work with Windows 95. So I had to use another configuration manager: the 'Plug and Play Configuration Manager' by Intel. It works fine and probably also works for Windows 3.1. If you don't have Creative's CTCM or other utility on your disk, then I recommend the Intel one. Check out the Intel website. If you can't find it there, I can e-mail you a copy. It'll work, believe me. You DON'T need to get an old-fashioned card with jumpers. I do agree with ENVY as regards an upgrade to Windows 95 though. You may not need it to get your sound card to work but it IS a whole lot better than Windows 3.1 http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif And a 486 with 16Mb RAM will run it just fine. David isitorisitnot 04-01-1999, 12:27 AM I have a 486 with an Award bios v4.50g and I'm tring to install a plug and play sound card(I've actually tried 4 differnt ones now)but my pc just doesnt see the card. Does this bios support plug n play? If not does anyone make a cheap non plug n play sound card? Thanks everyone got this one solved with a sound blaster 16 and its configuration software works like a champ now. [This message has been edited by isitorisitnot (edited 04-01-99).] SysOpt.com
