If you are getting CPU usage at 100%, KB835732 may be the problem.

Chicago (IL) - According to an article of German online magazine heise online, the recently published Microsoft patch 835732 can cause annoying problems: Readers of the magazine reported issues as severe as PCs failing to boot.

You might want to think twice about installing the 835732 patch, which was described in Microsoft's security bulletin MS04-011. Raders of heise online complained about 100 percent CPU usage after installating the patch and rebooting the PC as well as complete failures to reboot Windows NT and Windows 2000 systems. SecurityFocus lists similar information.

Microsoft has not yet responded to the issues reported. A solution currently is only to deinstall the patch, which will leave your PC wide open with 14 security holes. Users at Tek-Tips have listed a simple guide how to remove the patch.

We've had it installed on our XP pc's since April 13th with no problems so far.

Thanks for the heads up.

Some people have been complaining about 100% cpu usage. This might be the answer. I don't like posting the same fix everytime.

One one of our machines we received an error after installing the patch. It said that the "register entry point in CRYPT32.DLL could not be found". The error also referenced winlogon.exe

This system could not be rebooted after the error. I assume that RegServer failed to register CRYPT32.DLL after the update on this particular machine. We installed the patch on 80+ machines and have only had the problem with one system.
