Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Any App to list files on drive?

I don't know what happened, but over night I gained almost 80 gigs of files on my data hd. It's a 120 gig max, partitioned into 30 and 90 gig partitions. The 90 gig was at 80 gig free the other day. Now shows as less than 4 gig free. Looking for an app to list the files on the drive so I can find out what happened. Used Norten System and drive checks good, but almost 85% fragmented! Same in Windows disk defrag/cleanup. Running NAV, Housecall and Pandasoft, Adaware and Spybot regularly.

Did you unhide all files and folders in Folder Options and look at the drive? What's there?

Yep, doesn't show much. Did a search using date and size, can't come up with much, nothing to add up to 80 gigs. Just ran Adaware and came up with ebatesmoemoneymaker on the machine. Virus scan shows nada. I just got rid of our hub here and went with a new router that is suppose to have a firewall built in. So I didn't load Norton Firewall, probably a big mistake. You posted a while back a trojan checker. Do you still have that link?
Thanks

http://www.moosoft.com/products/cleaner/download/

http://www.avup.de/personal/en/avwinsfx.exe

Both work.

What you should probably consider is copying the good data from that drive and then formatting it.

Thanks BpB. Also ran XoftSpy, it picked up a whole slew of nasties on the drive. Thought NAV updated and in active mode with the firewall in the router whould have kept all that junk out. Gues not. Not too sure about NAV anymore. Pandosoft and Trendmicro seem to do just as good if not a better job of detecting virus(i) than NAV. Thankfully I was just getting the system back up, so just going to reformat the whole drive and be done with it. I don't know what was causing the problems as there was so much, but what ever it was it was using the internet quite a lot. Even when I looked at the drive with NAV and explorer, there where only 10 gigs of files I could see, even using the show hidden file tab. While I was watching, it was actually adding files to the drive. Weird, but gone now.
Thanks again.

The firewall in your router needs to be configured most likely. My router came with no protection at all. I had to enable the firewall and configure the ports. The firewall didn't do anything before that.

FileStructureToHTML (http://fsth.sourceforge.net/) has worked alright for me in the past. I'm not exactly sure what good it will do you here, but you can try it anyway.

I'm sure that someone was making your PC a porn server. You are going to have to keep up better.

Are you sure that ALL files and folders are shown? That's strange stuff.

Don't blame NAV. If you don't keep it or any other AV program up-to-the-minute, a virus can disable it and wreak havoc. Watch your habits. If you download a file and run it and it does nothing, it's probably a virus.

Uninstall NAV and then reinstall to be sure that it wasn't harmed.

You should always go to a site like grc.com to test your "shields" and "ports" when installing a router or any firewall. :)

Also, the latest viruses out there are finding ways around the "big" anti-virus programs (NAV, McAfee, etc...). That's why it is a good idea to have a program like BpB suggested - http://www.avup.de/personal/en/avwinsfx.exe - installed (at the very least, downloaded and ready to be installed when needed). Do not run more than one anti-virus program at a time, but you can have more than one installed if you wish (just don't have it run at startup). I just use AntiVIR (and on-line scans every so often). Catches everything (so far).

Good luck! :D

Ok, got router configured. Instructions didn't show that. Have always kept Norton up to date, got it set to look for updates every hour. Also installed Zonealarm Pro on all the machines.
Hopefully it won't happen again. Live and learn.

mobo57,

...just curious, but what type of internet connection do you have that has enough bandwidth to download 80 gigs of data overnight?

Have 3,000 down/ 416 kps up dsl commercial account with dslextreme. Absolutely the best dsl I have ever had. Verizon was probably 20% of the speed. Seems generally download speeds are limited to the other end. Just recently downloaded a 10 meg file from Ms and took about 35 seconds. Have had other sites that are several times faster.
I am not sure what happened, but the system in question while on line, was not used being used at the time by anyone. Even using explorer, I could not find more than about 8 gigs of files. Some how all else was hidden from me. Don't know if it was downloaded or something else. But all I know is my hd indicator light was blinking constantly and my internet activity indicator was doing the same.

i'd be curious to compare your net bandwidth to mine...attached is a screenshot from my toast.net performance test...i ran it off the free toast.net CA server....maybe if you get a chance you could do the same, and we could compare speeds :)

Talked to the tech guy (the one I'm gonna kill someday) who helps me out sometimes. He thinks when I was downloading some shareware I picked up a virus that basically opened the door. He agrees with you BpB somebody was using my server as their server, and probably porn. I guess they have ways of hiding their activity from the normal noob so to speak. LOL, it's corrected now. Too bad I had to do a reformat and re-install.
MJC: here is my speed test this a.m.
I'll give it a try later tonight, usuall get much better results then, I am in an area where there is a lot of traffic. Looking at your results, what kind of service do you have? We have a company that offers t1 access, but everyone I know that has it complains that it can get very slow and bogged down with traffic.

Must be sweet to have that kind of band width. Here is one I just ran, a little faster, but not up to what I am suppose to get. Gonna have to call tech support and find out ( though it is still good).
