My system will go into standby/sleep or will hibernate as long as I do NOT also activate the screen saver. Once the screen saver is activated the system will no longer go into standby mode or hibernate. Does anyone have any thoughts on why this may be the case????

Are you using a data-crunching screensaver like Seti@Home, Folding@Home or Grid.org?
Is this a laptop? Why do you need hibernate?

No data crunching just a 3d image (stock) on a desktop. Looking to shutdown all my fans and system when no one is using the computer.

Well, IMO, screensavers are nothing but moneymakers for their creators. If I were you, I would choose "Blank screen" for my screensaver.

I like some of the cool 3D screensavers. There are some awesome openGL and directX ones (both free and open source ones) that I'd like to run. I have the same problem though, if I run any screensaver that uses hardware acceleration, the video card will not shut off. This means either I have to manually turn off the monitor but the video card keeps running at high temp, or I don't run them at all. I'd like them to run for the 15 minute time-out I have set just for eye-candy
