windows media player playing mpg

I just discovered that my windows media player v9 does not play .mpg files anymore. Recently I have been playing around with a lot of dvd software with lots of installs and uninstalls so I don't know if something has happened as a result of that or what. I have tried installing some codecs but either they are the wrong ones or they don't work. Can anybody help me out with this situation?

Just un-install Wmp9.
Then re-install, use windows update to pick up all latest codecs etc.

Thanks Steve but i already tried that. When I play an .mpg or avi now it has the audio but just a black screen. I don't know what else to do now.

Install Gspot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/download.html) to see what codecs the video uses and wether or not they are installed.
