Here is the relevant background: Celeron 300a on a BH6 not overclocked. Win98, 3com 10/100 card. Modem is a Lucent WinModem.

The situation: Modem can log on to network(ISP) however when I try to access any site I get the message server can not be found. Also when I try and ping a well known IP I get no response. The modem logs on to the ISP(worldnet), I can see the few initial packets sent to the ISP. I cannot access any remote servers(INET). I know the dialup account is configured correctly because it is the same one I use on my laptop. This system was build in Feb and I have yet to get the modem to work.

What I have tried:
1. Removed NIC and reinstalled modem.
2. NIC removed, blew away all network protocols, and reinstalled modem.
3. Reinstalled Windows
4. Got my hands on a hardware based modem (56k v90 ISA Rockwell) and tried the above steps.

All these attempts have resulted in the exact same response. The ability to log on, but not do anything further. We can rule out the modem hardware and the NIC card. I even ran the Internet connection wizard, thats how blown away I am...

Am I missing a setting on my BIOS or something along those lines? Or some obscure win98 setting. Any help is appreciated,

Thanks Brian

This is going to sound unusual because you haven't been able to connect to any sites.
But..
Clear out everything in the Temporary Internet Files, the History folder and the Cookies folder.

I will give that a shot. However outside of cookies/site info installed by windows(any?) they all should be blank. It seems like when I try to connect to a site, the packets do not even leave my system. It is an almost instant response of "server cannot be located..." I thought it may be trying to use the NIC to connect to the site but it does the same thing even with the NIC removed.

The following is an excerpt from the above link. The resolution is also there.

When you try to connect to a Web site using Internet Explorer, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

You may receive one or more of the following error messages:

- Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site Web address. A connection with the server could not be established.

- Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site URL: Web site the connection to the server was reset.

Internet Explorer may display a different Web site than the one you specify in the Address box.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if a Hosts file with incorrect entries exists in the Windows folder.

I've been off my mark recently but I hope that this helps.

Make sure your connection in DUN under properties of my connection (or whateva u called it) under server types.. u have tcp/ip checked. and ipx/spx and netbieu unchecked... tcp/ip properties is obtain IP automatically..and if u have multiple protocols.. tcp/ip is the default protocol for ur dialup adapter..
because if u can logon to ur ISP and cannot ping.. then that is ur problem (u can logon using another protocol but not using TCP/IP as the default ie. netbieu. and ipx/spx)
if you can ping an IP but cannot Ping a DNS ie. www.microsoft.com then u have a problem connecting with the DNS server.. of your ISP. check ur DNS settings and if they are correct..then ISP problem. HOPE this helps

Here we go again. This happens consistently when installing a new modem. Micro$oft has acknowledged the problem but offers no fixes. Here's mine: reinstall window$ over top of itself with the new modem in place. Works every time. Other option: reinstall a new browser (IE5 for example).
Cheers, Jim

Ok, I have checked the hosts file and that was not the problem. Also thought that my wsock32 dll could be corrupt so replaced that. I am currently installing win98 again over the installed modem. Hope it works
