you are not getting an IP from your router. that is an APIPA address. if you can't ping the router or get into the configuration webpage, then you obviously won't get internet.

did you set the laptop with the same SSID as the router? is your nic set to infrastructure mode, NOT adhoc? did you enable dhcp on the router? did you enable any WEP encryption or MAC address filtering?

I would do a complete reset of the router to disable any encryption or filtering. then make sure you are using the same SSID and set your network card to infrastructure mode.

if you're using winxp, then use the wireless zero configuration wizard.

if anything, you can set a static IP and then connect to your router's configuration page.

I actually am using windows xp. I already logged on to the network configuration settings of the router, http://192.168.2.1
I enabled encryption already, I did everything in the configuration, and still not working. What might be the problem? the SSID name in the laptop is "default", and I don't know how to check it in the router, is that it? or what can casue this problem?

you need to make sure you can connect to the internet before you go around setting encryption. like I said, reset the router to the default configuration then go from there.

The SSID needs to be the same on the router and the network card.

what is the make and model of your router and nic?

The router is a D-link DI-624, I will reset it, and should that make it work?? I would go all over the configuration settings just like I did before, but how can I check the SSID names so that I know if they match?

ok so I checked the SSID names, they are both default. I don't know what the problem may be? I cannot think of anything else. I cannot get an IP, the DHCP does not respond. I actually can use the internet if I plug a cable to the wireless router, but if I try using it wireless, I can't connect to internet, but it actually detects the wireless connection, and says "connected to default, excelent signal" but not the internet.

after you reset the router (hold the reset button for 10sec), go into the configuration page. there should be a place called SSID. compare that to your network card settings. if you allow SSID broadcast, your laptop should automatically sense the correct SSID. check your IP. you should be getting a 192.168.2.x with a SM of 255.255.255.0. make sure you also have dns settings.

ok did that, they have the same SSID name. The IP is set to dynamic, the dhcp is enabled, the DNS adress has 0.0.0.0, the name of the SSID is "default" channel 6. the MTU is 1500 (which I don't know what that is) WEP enabled, Authentication is to "open system", key type is set to "HEX", 64 bit. the WAN has a default gateway of 192.168.2.1. mm.. thats all I know

DNS is 0.0.0.0

that's the problem. if the router doesn't get the DNS address from your ISP, internet won't work. power off the cable/dsl modem and the router. boot the dsl modem first. then power up the router. you need to see the dns server info in the router. disable WEP until you can get connect to the internet.

gotta run. bbl

GREATTT!!!!!! THANKS MAN.... I reaally appreciate it...

should I leave the WEP disabled?

should I leave the WEP disabled?
No, I wouldn't. You should also make your SSID's difficult to guess, turn off broadcasting the SSID, and lock your MAC address(es) in the router.

Good luck! :D

hey, if I enable the WEP, I cannot access the internet wireless.... what can I do, to have it enabled, and actually be able to surf online.?????

I only said to disable WEP so that you could get everything connected. After you are sure everything is working, then you can apply your security.

if you lose connectivity, then you are applying WEP wrong. go to the router and create the key, then copy that key on your laptop.
