Valve's Gabe Newell seems bent on creating as much confusion as possible regarding Half-Life 2s release date. In a recent interview to Polygon magazine, Mr. Newell suggested that the company was determined to do what it takes to ensure H-L 2 is the ultimate first person experience when it's released and he included the possibility of delaying the game until 2005 if that would help its development.
When looking at the interview however, it seems that the comments were made in the context of a hypothetical extreme, in order to stress Valve's commitment to the title rather than as a realistic prospect for the much troubled sequel. It is however unfortunate that hypothetical extremes now seem plausible when considering the downward development spiral that Half-Life 2 has been in.
Here is the full, relevant, quote so that you can make your own minds up as to what exactly Mr. Newell may have meant:
We've already spent millions into this project, and we're willing to spend as much as we need to make this the best first-person experience ever. If that means delaying the game to 2005, we'll do it without any hesitation.
If it means sinking another USD 20 million into the project, we can do it. Rest assured, if we delay the game, it'll be only to blow your socks off even more when it finally releases

one should never expect a game on the date they say it will come out. Only when it goes gold do you really know its coming out.

Another cycle of enough is never enough and now they have so much more to push and play with in terms of raw power becoming available. Starting to sound like 3DRealms over there.

Gabes whole point here is that, if necessary, to improve the game, he will delay it till 2005, but only if it will bring about an improvment in the gaming experience.
This is by no means a confirmation that the game will definitley be put back to 2005, but that they aint frightened to take such an action for the sake of improving the game, good on them, I would rather wait a while longer and get a real gem rather than have a polished turd land immediatley in my lap (if you'll pardon the mental imagery)

Is like the movies - they put some releases back and people (like dumb ones) say "it must be good if they are not happy with the end result and need to polish the sfx" All PR ain't it? People will get hungry for the game and then buy it on release as they are desperate to have it......
Didn't they push back Attack of the Clones movie? And look what a pile of cow piles that turned out to be.

Counter Strike: CZ was "delayed" SIX months, after it was announced as gold.

ok ok exception to the rule, but generally they don't make the production copy until they are ready to release the game :)

I am of the opinion that the hype surrounding HL2 and D3 has been so great, the actual games will suck in comparrison to the mounting expectations.
Why did they start teasing us a year ago? Until it's on the shelf, release dates are about as firm as pudding.

I dunno I heard DOOM3 (in its current state) was AWSOME from a good source, that never says a game is good if its not GOOD .
He said he almost jumped up in his chair with the lights on and people in the room with him b/c it scared him that much lol.

Just read it. Bless 'im!!
He'll get over it :)
I do agree that with the amount of hype surrounding a game can produce an end result of a pile of poo as people's expectations would be set way too high. By the time they release D3 or HL2 there may be another game to give it a serious run for it's "high street" money!!
Do you reckon they have a deal going with ATI and Nvidia so that they only release the games when their cards have flooded the market so they can all cash in? Wouldn't surprise me.

I wouldn't be surprised if HL2 was delayed, again. But i have a good feeling that the next official release day will be the final. :)

It isn't that I have a need to play the game, I just have to wonder sometimes if companies know when enough is enough. If they haven't made something great yet, then how long does it take?
I'm happy when companies hold a buggy game or game that just needs some work, but if it is a good game, and it is practically finished, why drag it out more when you already have something great? I only want a game I feel I got my money's worth, not a piece of artwork that is priceless.

Personally I am fed up with Valve's **** and I don't plan on buying HL2 until it goes to a budget price. I'd rather play Doom 3 and Halo 2 anyways.

I know this sucks but look at it this way:
Valve have made arguably one of the best games of all time with Half-Life, and they want to ensure they do the same with Half-Life 2.
They know it'll be a winner when it comes out, and they'll easily make profit on it, so they need to make absolutely sure that no one can criticise when it is finally released.
Imagine what would happen if they stuck to a May (or whenever) release date only to have the game given (say) 80% in reviews because of bugs/glitches that should have been ironed out.
I don't want to see the game delayed any more either, but Valve are planning to release another winner that'll be remembered for the next 5+ years, and I'm afraid its not easy.
They want to make absolutely sure its the best game ever, and that's fair enough, I guess.
