This is drivin me crazy ... and its also annoyin:mad:
I have
Abit kg7 lite board, ie6
AMD Athlon 1800XP, Flower cooler
Windows XP upgrade (fresh install friday)
Antec 550w psu ( 4days old)
crucial pc2100 ddr 512mb slot 1, It wont run in slot 2.
Ati rage fury 32mb tv card
80gb hd Maxtor ( Master)
40gb hd Seagate ( back up disconnected)
Freecom cd/rw
Creative 5x cd rom
Haynes 56 v92 modem
Logitech (corded) keyboard + Logitech cordless mouse
2 Case fans
Firewire, soundblaster live, and usb2 card all removed tonite.
Im slowly running out of ideas as to what is causing my pc to freeze at random times.
Ive run memtest86 and it showed now errors in memory, ive run diagonostice on both hd's
Could it be the Graphics card would that cause my pc to freeze ?
ive also tryed another mouse and keyboard and it still freezed
Any other ideas or help i would be really greatfull
Thanks Mike :t

Power fluctuations can cause a system to freeze. Have you noticed any power bumps? Do you have a UPS?? :t
How are your temps?? They might cause a freeze as well.

Cant say ive noticed anything with the power, and i dont have a UPS installed didnt think id need one as this is just a home pc.
Ive checked the temp with the software that came with the Abit board and its shows around about 40c with the fan mate turned rite down..before i changed the PSU it used to show 44-45c.
BTW: I have got all my devices plugged into a surge protector i dont no if this makes a difference.
Should i remove the surge device and try it without ?
Or is it worth buying a new graphics card and tryin this ?
I dont even now if a graphics card can cause a pc to freeze ?

If it was running too hot it might. Does it have a fan or just a heat sink? If it has a fan, is it working properly?

If your grafix card has bad drivers it can cuase freezin. I know I had that problem here a little while ago. I'd start there and see what happens...

The ATI card has a heat sink its old card id say about 4yrs old, Sometimes the pc didnt have to be on long before it freezed.
Also with the ATI drivers i installed on friday wen i did a clean install shouldnt they at least work for a while longer before they go bad or need updating, as ive never had this problem before, its only over the last few mths this has started happening and ive added nothing else new.
Maybe ill have to change the graphics card
Mike
Ps: Anybody recommend a good decent card ?

It really depends on how much you want to spend:
Under $65: Geforce FX 5200 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-140-017&depa=1)
$118: Geforce FX 5700 (http://www.gameve.com/gve/store/productdetails.aspx?sku=VC-ALBA-024)
$175: Geforce FX 5900XT (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-135-138&depa=1)
That Geforce 5900 XT is probably one of the best bang/buck card out today. But since you already have an older card (I assume you don't game much), that Geforce FX 5200 is good also. It's a fairly descent gaming card, though. I have one. :t

rainman, drivers do not have an expiration date. What I mean is that it could be a bad installation of drivers. I had a simliar problem with freezing with my video card when I used the packaged drivers (from ATI) but I updated to the most recent drivers and have had no freezing since...My freezin was also random but also occurred more frequently when I was doing something video oriented...just give it a try.

So did it work out?

I'm wondering if the card is not pressed in further enough? I had one which kept freezing adn could not find the problem until I stripped the system and reseated the agp card. Hey presto no more lock ups. Try and see if it is this that is causing the problem.
Cheers Asterias
