Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : How to enable port 443?

I was playing with a utility that identified port 443 as a security risk so I chose to block the port. Turns out that is the port used for secure transactions on the internet so I can no longer do this. I can't remember the utility I used. Anyway, nobody seems to know how to "unblock" this port. The port is not being blocked by my firewall or router or ISP. Setting my firewall (Sygate) to allow this port does not fix the problem. I have scanned for spyware, trojans and viruses and all is cool. I am going crazy.
Running XP home, 'puter is working fine otherwise. Thanks in advance for any suggestions offerred.

Did you try what the moderator at Escape from hardware hell told you to do? Open network connections, right click on local area connection and select repair.

Left click start >connect to >show all connections >right click on network bridge >click on properties >highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) >properties >advanced >options >properties
Do you see the attachment, or is there a checkmark in Enable TCP/IP filtering?

Huh? I know you don't mean the windows start button. If I click on the attachment I get a TCP/IP filtering thing and the TCP/IP filtering box is not checked. Click start where???

Click Start(the bottom left corner of your desktop), click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
Right-click the network connection that you want to configure, and then click Properties.
On the General tab (for a local area connection), or the Networking tab (for all other connections), click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties, then click advanced and click on options and then click properties.

Uncheck it, put a bullet in Permit All for all 3, then click ok,ok,ok,and close. You may have to re-boot. Then see if you can view https pages (443).

Well, I had high hopes...did as suggested...rebooted. Still cannot access secure sites. A laptop running Win98 on same little home network has no problem with https sites.
Any other thoughts will be welcomed.

Have you tried accessing with non IE based browsers? Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/)

Interesting idea...I thought of using mozilla, never heard of firefox but will google it. Have used only IE for about 10 years. Maybe it's time to try something else. If another browzer works I guess that would suggest my IE6 needs repair or re-install.

Downloaded and installed Firefox. It won't let me connect to HTTPS sites either (it times out). Oh well, at least I have a new browser to play with.

Sorry about that.
Log in as an Administrator, open cmd again and type C:\documents and settings\(your account)>netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt and hit enter.

my wife says I resemble somebody with no life while f*****g around with this. Anyway, when i enter CMD I get a command line of C:\documents and settings\<my account>\desktop>
When I enter "netsh" it switches to netsh>. When I enter the other stuff I get "the following command was not found: int ip reset log.txt"
My wife is right...life is too short...I give up
Thanx for your efforts

You added desktop Joe. It should look like the attachment.

I'm a glutten for punishment...I did not add "desktop". That's what comes up when I enter "CMD". And I cannot get rid of "desktop" either by backspacing over it or using the old DOS change directory (CD) command.

I would do a repair of XP at the very least , back up or save all the stuff you want to keep and then do a clean install. Or just do a clean install.
Get yourself good imaging software and use it to make images of your system in good working condition so you can restore it to a previous state if you get a S.N.A.F.U.
Good luck.
