This MBD overheats in the area
of the board designated K,8. The aluminum
heatsinks, located behind the CPU, burn extremely
hot after 5 min of being powered up. I do not
know the reason for this problem.

I purchased this board on FEB. 1, 1999. I put
together this system that day, and it worked
wonderfully for the next 2.5 weeks. I would
run the sytem for hours and hours at a time,
with no problems. I know of the great overclockability of the celeron, of course I had to try, sooo... I tried and easily got to 450mhrz, most of those two weeks it was running at 450! Then I decided that I had to have more speed, afterall, the system was only posting temperatures, of 84`F. So I jumped to 464 mhrz. It booted fine, but I could now smell the foul stench of cicuits burning! Quickly I turned it back down(the bus), but I could not return to any stability at any clock speed. After 5 min the system would overheat to temps in excess of 115`F. I tried it again, with
diferent combination of hardware and even
different CPU's. In every trial, the MBD blazed
very HOT. I have contacted the reseller and
they agreed to RMA me a new MBD upon
further testing. I received that new board(this board) and
installed it. I tested the system all night
running the system for 8+ hours non-stop, with
no problems. Then this morning I rebooted the
system and the MBD overheated, at any clock speed. Please note
that there is no problem with running windows
or any software, I just fear the incredible heat
(X>115`F) that is produced next to my other
system components(CPU etc.) and the overall
stability of my data, plus it really does stink.

I'm no expert on overclocking but I did note that there is one extremely important point you neglected to mention - your methods of cooling. Obviously, if you intend to overclock then your cooling techniques must be a good deal more efficient than the bare minimum required for ordinary running.

Also, it would be a good idea to state the make and model of your motherboard. Anyone here with the same one would then be able to give you the benefit of their experience.

Hope you find a solution soon. The aroma of frying circuits is not a pleasant one!

As previously mentioned, cooling is very important; is the cooling fan(s)working properly? Is it possible that something has gone wrong with the CPU that is now causing your 2nd board to overheat also?

Thanks all for replying. Yes I did leave out vital information(sorry)!

The MBD is an AOpen AX6B, and the cooling is a standard Al heatsink fan combo, with thermal grease. The cooler worked awesome until i decided i needed more and jumped it to 464, then Hell came into my life!

Thank you.

I agree that it most definetly sounds like your CPU fan is not working correctly or else it just isn't powerful enough. I read an article on overclocking Celeron 300A's and up posted by www.sharkyextreme.com and they repeatedly stressed the importance of having a powerful fan/heatsink combo. I think that you might be wise to check out their website for this article and any others and then look into another, more powerful fan. One thing that struck me about the article was that just that little bit of extra heat is enough to push the CPU over the edge. That is probably what happened with yours. Good luck!

The aluminum heatsinks are there to cool the voltage regulator on the MB. A temp of 115 F. is not something I would be alarmed at. The smell however... .
Is ther any CPU core voltage adjustment availible on the MB? If so check to see if it is correct. Another thought concerns airflow around the heatsink- are there any Ribbon cables blocking the movement of air?
Good luck solving the puzzle!

Thank You all,

I appreciate everyones input on the matter. To update evry one on the current status of My 'Hot and Sweaty'(stinky) mBD or CPU...

I have got a brand new OEM celeron 300A, put it in, and there was no change, hot as ever, I tried it with the case off and a room fan blowing air onto CPU withevery window in the house open(BRRR). No change, (the aluminum heat sinks on the MBD actually seared my finger when i went to touch test it!)

Oh well, must not be the best MBD <-->CPU combo ever thought up. We will see what happens next. At least my house has been fumigated.
