PC1 and PC2 are networked via NetBEUI. I created a Briefcase in PC2 to store approximately 500-1000 files in a folder from PC1. The idea is to use this utility as a cheap way of backing up my files (I know Win95 comes with a backup utility; I'm merely trying out an alternative method). [I can also imagine using Briefcase to compare the dll files in windows/system directory before and after installing new software when I don't have a third-party utility to do so. What do you think?]

When the number of files is small, the idea seems to work well: Any addition/deletion of files or modification to the existing files is reflected in the Briefcase over the network.

As the number of files grows to several hundred, however, the update begins to fail. Even if I add or delete a file in PC1's folder, the result of synchronizing the Briefcase in PC2 is always "No file needed updating".

Is there a limit to the number of files Briefcase can handle?

Thanks

Don't know about the file number limitation of briefcase.

A few thoughts:

I wonder if, in this case, the limit of opened files in Win95 are a concern.

Isn't Breifcase synchronized oneway. PC1 files sync with PC2 or vise versa.

How about the NIC settings. Have you tried going from full duplex to half duplex (or vise versa) for more compatible data transfer with Briefcase.

Try just one Briefcase and move it between PC1/2. (Strike that. its like moving a folder back and for.)

How about multiple Briefcases.

Thank you, gentlemen. I appreciate comments from both, and I will keep the number of files per Briefcase to about 100.

Windows doesn't like more than 100 files or so in a briefcase. I ran into this problem with my files I shuttle back and forth from home to work on a Jaz disk. Most of the time the problems were just "low resources" messages. I would just click on OK and it would be fine. However, once in a while it would crash and the briefcase I was updating would contain nothing but Orphan files.

You can have more than one briefcase, which is what I do. I have around 1500 or so files in about 8 briefcases all in the root directory on the Jaz disk. Some of the briefcases are a little big but usually if nothings running they update without a problem. Stay at 100 if there's anyway possible, it's a whole lot more trouble free. I just hate updating each briefcase every morning.

I really wish there was something other than briefcase for doing this though, it's just not up to the task IMO.
