Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : can't conncet to IE 6.0 or Outlook Express?
I recently tried to install a USB wireless adaptor on my laptop, running 98SE. Ever since I installed the software/drivers I haven't been able to access IE or Outlook Express. I haven't even tried to configure the wireless network to share a connection. All I won't to do right now is dialup to my Earthlink Account, and check email and browse IE. I can connect, but when I click on IE or outlook express, the error page can't be displayed comes up. I have the connection set to dial my default connection. I don't know what happened. I click on IE and click on connect window. The modem makes the connection, and it says that I'm connected, but the page error keeps appearing. Should I try installing a different browser, if some of the IE files have been deleted? I don't have the 98SE disk to reinstall IE.
Thanks for your help.
After I can access the internet again, maybe I'll try to config. the wireless network.

You're going to have to be more clear.
1. How were you connecting before? Is there another PC. How is it connected?
2. Is a wireless router/access point set up yet? You can't connect to Earthlink with a wireless adapter alone.
3. Have you run INETWIZ.EXE and selected LAN as your connection?
You really need to read the instructions and set up your network.

I would remove the adapter so that Windows doesn't try installing its driver at startup, then backdate the system files by booting into DOS mode at startup by pressing the F8 key.
Choose the command line and enter scanreg /restore and pick a CAB file to restore that predates the installation of the adapter.
Then you can learn how to set up a network before you go ahead blind.
There's plenty of how-to info avialable on http://www.practicallynetworked.com.

That's for the information.
Before the installation of the usb adapter, I was using Earthlink dialup. But, ever since the installation I haven't been able to open any web pages or receive any emails. I have my internet connection set to alway dial my default connection. Right now I just want to connect to the internet.
I used V comm. system suite utility to restore an old registry before the installation of the wireless adapter, but it still won't access IE or outlook express. It will dialup and connect, but won't bring up anytime, but the error page. I don't have the 98SE disk anymore.
Can I just install another web browser, instead of IE, and surf the internet? I have an XP home editon disk, can I copy IE 6.0 off of the disk?
As far as setting up the network. I can share files and folders between the 2 computers, but I can get it to share the connection. I went to the practical networking website and did what they said, to share the connection. But, still didn't work. The network consist of a HP laptop running xp home ( it has the Belkins 54g router software/drivers installed of it). The other computer on the network is the laptop running 98SE (which can't connect to the internet or outlook express, as described above). I can however share files and folders between the 2 computers, just not the internet connection.
I have set up a wireless network at me house with both computers running xp home, and had no problems. I don't know if 98SE is the problem?
Thats for your help

You still haven't told us your connection type *now". Are you using Dial-up, DSL or cable?
Please run INETWIZ.EXE on the laptop and select LAN.
dialup connection. But, the network is using a cable broadband connection.
I tried running inetwiz.exe and set the connection to dial my default conncection, which is dialup. I'm not really concerned about the network sharing the connection, at this time. Because I might return the netgear 54g adapter to CompUsa. I just want to get back surfing the net and receiving emails, thru dialup.
Thanks

I'm going to try to make this clear:
You don't have broadband unless you have Cable or DSL. Stop calling it that. You have an Ethernet network - that's all. Your main PC uses dial-up.
I told you to select LAN on lthe laptop and you went and selected dialup. Why do you bother to ask if you won't follow instructions? Select LAN on the laptop. It is not connected to a modem - it is connected via LAN (local area network) to the main PC. I'll say it again - select LAN.
You must install ICS on the main PC. You must disable DHCP on a router if you are using one. The main PC becomes the DHCP server during ICS and running another DCHP server on your network will mess it up royally. You will get nowhere like that.
Understand?
The main computer is a HP laptop running xp home edition. It has a wireless card installed and connected to a Belkins 54g router WHICH IS CONNECTED TO A CABLE MODEM (BROADBAND).
I tried to connect the Compaq laptop running 98SE to the network using a netgear 54g usb wireless adapter. After the installation of the adapter I can't access IE 6 or Outlook Express through the network (on this computer). I can however share files between the 2 computers. But, not the internet connection. The HP laptop running xp home has no problem connecting to IE or Outlook Express.
When I mention dialup connection. That is what the Compaq laptop running 98SE used to connect to the internet, before I tried installing the netgear usb adapter.
Since I can't get the 98SE laptop to share the broadband wireless network connection w/ the HP laptop. I would like to just continue using my dialup connection ( as before). I've set the connection to dial my default connection. It dials up and gets connected to Earthlink, but I can't access the web or Outlook Express. I tried a system file scan and some files were missing, so I had to copy them off of another 98SE computer (since I don't have the 98SE disk). I ran the system file scan and everything is ok. I tried again to access IE and I'm still getting the same error page. Can it be something in IE6 that got changed in the installation of the netgear adapter? Can I reinstall IE6 off of one of my xp home disks? Or should I just install a new browser other than IE6, and would that take care of the problem?
It would be nice to be able to access the network with the 98se computer, so I can have high speed internet. But, if it's going to be this much trouble; I'd just like to be able to go back and use my Earthlink dialup again.
I hope I explained the situation better this time, and you can understand the problem. I have a cable wireless network, and tried to add the 98se laptop to it. I can't get it to share the high speed connection. So, I just would like to go back and continue using my Earthlink dialup. That's the problem in a nut shell...
Thanks again, and sorry for any confusion.

Does the wireless adapter on the Win98 machine give indication that it is connected?
The Belkin router (it must be a router and not an access point) provides Internet services to the Win98 machine. Check the router setup to be sure that the additional PC is allowed and that you're using the same channel.
This is not an IE or Outlook issue. This is a connection issue. If you insist on using dial-up again, you must uninstall the wireless adapter, remove and reinstall Dial-up Networking it Add/Remove programs > Windows Setup. Only then should you run INETWIZ and specify dial-up.
Personally, I would not give up on wireless. I would read the manuals more.
The netgear adapter says that its connected to the belkins router. and can ping the router. The netgear adapter says that it's channel 11. I'll have to check the channel of the belkins router when I get to work on Monday.
I agree I'd love to share the high speed wireless connection rather than going back to my dialup.
I can't believe it's given me this much trouble. I installed a wireless network at home on 2 computers running xp and sharing a cable connection. It was easy.
Thanks for your help.
I'll check the channel Monday on the router.
