you didn't mention onboard video before. radeons do not like boards with onboard video. ack.
did you go into the bios to see if you could disable the onboard video there? if it's not automatically disabled when an AGP card is installed, there should be some option to disable the onboard video. you might have to change the allocated memory to 0mb also.
 o ok; so that is it 4 ati. NICE.--in the bios i cant find video or graphics. if it help my mb is ga-8ik-1100 gigabyte.ok. so i gtg out 4 now---so thx 4 the help. --cu- illerate earl:t

is that the right model? that board doesn't have onboard video:
http://www.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/Products/Products_Spec_GA-8IK1100.htm
go into safe mode. remove all video cards and software. reinstall the latest catalyst drivers again.
:D .morning how u doing. ok all i no is the ati book says take out onboard video. so i looked in the bios and did not see any.so i looked in the device manager and see under sound video and game controllers and see legacy video capture devices. and video codecs.isnt this onboard video.---and yes ga 8ik 1100 mb ---illerate earl.

No, that is not on-board video.
What did you have before the ATI? It advised that you clean out your system of any previous drivers. I had nVidia and went ATI. I had to remove the drivers from the system, through device manager, then used 'Nasty File Remover' to get rid of any remains...
Installed the ATI. Booted. My system hung as the card was detected...then it finally loaded to the desktop with some basic VGA driver. I ran the ATI drivers and had to reboot a few times, it finally worked. I kept getting the error recovery message 'send report' garbage and it finally went away. Got the latest from the ATI site as well.
On board video refers to the video adapter as part of the motherboard. (integrated) If you don't have a VGA Monitor port sticking out of your motherboard, you don't have on-board video.
I would uninstall any video drivers and start over. Loading them over and over isnt helping. Go to the device manager and uninstall. Go to Add/Remove and uninstall the ATI...start over. Try again...it sounds like XP is loading some generic video driver before you have a change to load the ATI.
Good Luck!

there is one way to solve this problem real quik.
return the video card, and get a Nvidia card, and all this trouble will be long gone.
i know because i went thru this too menny time.
and Nvidia is the only solution...
work for me 5 times.
and now that you just remind me of all time i went crazy trying to make it work. i don't even care to see what ATI's new card as to offer in 2 weeks. i'm defintly geting the GeForce 6800. :r

What platform/operating system are you running? Is your operating system formatted FAT 32 or NTSF? Running the Catalyst software, etc. can be a real problem on NTSF. Even downloading the updated drivers, etc. on ATI's website won't automatically solve the problem.

it's FAT32 or NTFS. The file system has very little effect on the drivers, if any.
he's running win2k or xp just going by the file he downloaded, but I'm gonna guess it's xp.
that board doesn't have onboard video, so you're barking up the wrong tree. boot to safe mode to remove any other latent video card, software and drivers.
like others have mentioned, you need to completely remove the old video card drivers and start over. This is especially true if you had an nvidia card and used the detonator drivers.

I don't know about the remark about the file system. I have installed Ati in FAT 32 and NTFS. So far, I have only seen this problem on a NTFS system, Even on a clean, never used HDD. Usually, an update from their site does the trick for FAT32.
It is true that the board doesn't have onboard video. DO boot to safe mode and remove video card software and drivers.
Again, as others have stated, you do need to remove the old video card drivers and start fresh.
:D . hi all and thx 4 the replys.--good.news the drivers are in .but the bad news is the wrong 1s are in. according 2 the ati multimedia configuration. it recommends go to ati and get the latest drivers, does anyone know the right drivers to get for the ati 9800 pro? i get in there and i get lost. -- ati website sucks.- you were right i do have xp home. -in safe mode the only drivers i can find are the drivers from the cd that came with the card.and according to the configuration they are no good. fun heh-----------------thx illerate earl at 10 pm:t
