Looks like the interim salvo (before PCI Express) has been fired by Nvidia.

Nope, to me it doesnt represent enough of a leap upover in performance (in some games the R9800XT even marginally beats it on average) unless you play at 1280x1024 and similar high resolution's (where it does start to come into its own in terms of performance), and with the R420 and future versions of the NV40 being rolled out over the next three months i would wait and see how things end up in the long term, because at the moment the 6800U, whiel being the fastest card availiable at this point in time, doesnt strike me as being all that "next-gen", a label which i think the cards we're going to see in the coming months will really earn.

Agree, that's why I called it the "interim". It's fast, but not enough to pay 500$ and send my 9800 pro to the rubbish bin. Going to wait till year end before I even consider any upgrades that cost more than 20$.

I have only running a Pro at 405/780 right now and it was much higher than that before and I'm able to run everything maxed in Farcry with 2xAA, 2xAF at a solid 55FPS, 4xAF at 40-30 range. Both at 1024x768x32. That is solid enough for me. Not worth it at all in my opinion. It is a waste of money now unless you MUST have the best, even then that means you should wait for ATi's 12 and 16 piped R420 cores which aren't that far off to see which of the two is better. So I wouldn't think of trading it. You don't really know if your getting the best bang with either nvidia or ATi and you still have the power to run games with full settings and decent levels of AA and AF at a relatively good resolution. So I'd definantly hold off. Also since you can run everything, you can afford to wait and prices will have dropped (very little I'd imagine, but some and that's always good).

do you have enough power? nvidia is recommending at least a 480W PS.

I would hold off for a bit. $500 is a lot of money. I'm gonna see how the 6800 (non ultra) does.

*Thick north-eastern accent*

"You're Jokin' Arn-Yeah?"

If this is meant to be their low end/mid range solution then theyre already excluding a lot of the MX/FX5200 type users on budget machines who usually make up the fair majority of Nvidia's sales. Heck there arent even many hardcore-enthusiasts out there running much above 420Watt's, i somehow think we might see a change in the power spec before the final release, if not Nvidia could be speccing themselves out of their own market

that's just the ultra. The 6800 is supposed to be single slot with only one molex connector. I didn't check what the power specs were on that, though. I'm too lazy right now. hehe

Definaly a very impressive card, however I personally cannot justify getting it since i've got a 9800Pro@420/380. If I had a DX8 card, or a low end DX9 one then it may be worth the purchase. I'd still wait till ATI's answer before making a definative choice.

Hey, like the article I posted in the Video Cards and Monitors forum, ATI has the same high power requirement too. ;)

Slower clock than yours now, but couldn't have said the rest better. The 9800 Pro has held up well in the first real D9 test.
