I just stopped my PC activity for a bit, and for some reason my modem was still uploading/downloading.
Now fearing a trojan I did a netstat, nothing showed up.
I scanned for spyware/viruses etc and that didn't show up anything, but what concerns me is that my modem was so active without actually having any open connections in netstat.
This was a good few minutes after closing anything which might need to linger a connection open after it's closed.
It wasn't a huge amount, but it was constantly trickling rather than just the odd small spurt of activity.

It's probably your own ISP polling the network. I get it too.

While you are on that topic, is there any way or tool that will identify throughput? I often see the lights on my cable modem activate for no apparent reason.

When On DSL you have you own personal line from your Modem to the DSLM in the Telco.
When on Cable Internet you are part of a Node sharing the same cable.
As a results you Modem reflects all the Pings and the Scans and what ever is active on the Node.
Given the prices of Cable/DSL Routers I would suggest to every one to use it, whether you have a Network or a single computer.
The Router insolates your system from all of these “Crazy” activities.

you are suggesting that the node acts like a hub on a netbui based network, but are mistaken about pings and scans being reflected.

I'm on Comcast Cable. My internet activity light flickers even when the computers are all off. I've gotten used to it doing this, figuring that it's something from the ISP. In fact, if I don't see it, it usually means we've lost the connection. Like yesterday when some moron at comcast removed the wrong account, but only partially. Morons.

This activity is logged by many Cablle/DSL Routers.
Some people take a look at the Log and get “Scared” thinking that they are under constant attack.
It is just like driving a Car, you are not alone there is “traffic”.
