Try bhlegend.com, they have a lot of good stuff, but not every game is downloadable, due to copyright reasons. From there there are also some good links to other sites, but i don't remember which ones. One is surely the Home of the Underdogs, anyway.

a text game / tiny bit of graphics is http://www.racewarkingdoms.com
basically, it's more of a chat room with vulgar people, who build kingdoms, attack each other, wage wars, kills monsters, and beasts.
It's free, but you are stuck on the surface with all the other n00bs...Once you pay a good sum of money, you can get all access and do many other things..

there are some on www.download.com (http://www.download.com)
if you go into the games section and then choose the subcatagori that you want you can filter it for only FREE downloads.

Well the games at the underdogs all are classic games (circa <1995). There are some newer freeware ones though. What games do you have problems with? I run over 10 with no issues under Windows XP Pro.
