Wierd one this, just reinstalled HL which was previously working fine, updated and patched to 1.1.1.0, however now whenever i play all the control settings are unnasigned and the mouse set as the main control/movment device. I can manually edit the settings but as soon as i enter a game they revert back to no keyboard controls. Ive tried manually editing the config.cfg file and even write-protected it, but still, every tiem i start the game the settings are returned to default.
It doesnt appear to be happening in Opfor, Ricochet, TFC etc, only HL
Any ideas fellas?

Jak..are you sure everything was gone from the registry before you did a re-install?
I wonder if the patch and update had anything to do with this..
All I can say is make sure you change things in controls from the main menu and recheck the settings again.... maybe uninstall the patches and see what happens..then
Good luck!

Changing things in the menu is fine, until you re-enter/start a new game, then everything gets reset to zero. Sounds like this is an issue as ive read a similar complaint elswhere. As for the update, its the current version (well over a year old now) so i dont think that would have anything to do with it

no where to save settings..??
I have the game ..so I will see what takes on this.... maybe be after noon today as I need to get some sleep.....stay up all night....I am a total idiot....and my brain has always worked the best ..the more tired it is..for some reason...go figure.....
As a kid growing up I was always very bright and analytical and everyone says I think too much ....not always the correct answers though.....but who is god anyway??  :D

Forgot about the additional updates availiable exclusively through Steam (a stupid, stupid program if ever there was one) im downloading all 300MB of it now to see if it helps

I had steam once and think I saved the loader somewhere..maybe....I had some issue with it and didn't care for it somehow..don't remember why offhand..
Some poeple seem to think it is a good online gaming site....that is good for those who like this....still nfairly new.by norms to the online gaming community...no reason just a new user ( less than three years ) but do like online gaming alot....just selective....some games are better suited for this...than others

I cant even be bothered with steam, i tried it upon its release and it was awful, its not much better. At the moment im using an older version of HL (1.0.1.6) which works okay, the only thing of course is that i cant go onlien with it as it isnt the current version, still i dont do much MP'ing with HL/CS/TFC anymore.
A bloody irritating little glitch though, given that ive never had this problem with the game on this machine or the two others, prior to today

Little things are genrally the most irritaing anyway..as you think its just something you can easily get rid of .and it turns out to be a real monster in hiding....
Hope you get this solved....try doing something else and taking your mind off of it for awhile..and then later come back to it casually with a clear conscience....That works alot of the time for me......

Well, its fair dinkum wierd this like.
I've sorted it...to an extent, the solution was to deny all users write permissions to the config.cfg file, that way the file cant be fiddled with/reset. However, the downside to this is that it can no longer be changed 'on the fly' in the game, i need to come out, change the permissions to allow write access, and adjust the settings manually in notepad... oh joy. It's a start i suppose, but still less than ideal

Normally if you change a setting in-game, it'll over-write the config file, undoing the changes you made out of game.
Best thing to do is put your 'custom' settings into autoexec.cfg (userconfig.cfg with steam).
Just to be sure you could add "exec autoexec.cfg" to your config.cfg but autoconfig.cfg should auto-load. (however, you can use this to load any other config file if you want mutliple configs.

Well, that works for HL, though again i cant actually make any config changes within the game, have to drop out and do it in notepad. However no go with Counter-Strike, as im guessing it picks up its settings from HL's config.cfg which is empty, thus its own config.cfg is empty and i cant find an example copy on the net to work from to rebuild my own configuration.

It should work for any HL mod, put the config in the mod's directory.
If it's not saving settings when you're editting them in game, well it /could/ be like with quake2, but I've never heard of it in HL, in that if you used "quit" from console it wouldn't save the config but if you used the menu to exit it would save settings.
But I've never heard of that behaviour in HL.
Make sure your configs aren't read only if you want HL to edit them.
If your entire config.cfg is empty that's kind of worrying, I assume you've tried reinstalling?
I wuold help, but atm I only have hl 1.0.0.6 (i.e. no patches installed) on my PC and there are large differences between 1.0.x.x and 1.1.x.x

Its not that it isnt working for CS, the problem is that when CS is installed its creating a blank config.cfg as such i cant create a custom autexec config for it, as its key commands differ from those used in HL/TFC etc. Thus the autoexec method is working, but i can only fill in half the key binds i need from personal memory. I'ma have to get someone to send me their config.cfg for CS and use that as my Autoexec.cfg

As I said, I would have done, if not for the fact I recently removed it :(
However, from memory I do key binds, but other stuff is more tricky.
+duck
+speed (walk)
+forward
+back
+left
+right
+use
+jump
+snapshot (screenshot function, "screenshot" command does tga files)
Oh, if you go into half-life and type "cmddump" (I think?) it'll dump commands to a file. vardump, or cvardump?? Will do the same for cvars, erk it's been far too long, you might have to check those :(
Tab-completion of commands works in HL, so use that to find the right command for those :\
