I'm running Win98 on an ASUS P2B board with a Celeron 450A, both SCSI and IDE drives. The secondary IDE channel is marked with an exclamation point "!" and says "This device is either not present, not working properly or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10). I already tried removing the controller and reinstalling the device but it's still the same. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Thanks

when ive had this problem on win95 osr2 on a newly built system ive reinstalled the intel P11X bus master drivers and that has usally done the trick.sometimes if you click on the configer manually button and check the use automatic settings this will also resolve the problem.you can also get this problem if any ref to the real mode drivers have not been properly removed from your autoexec.bat or config.sys ie not remmed out. this conflict occurs when the bus master driver attempts to access the legacy ISA IDE resourses to control the P11X.try this and let us know.or am i talking dribble

Unlike Protected mode drivers in which the program is restricted to addressing a specific contiguous area of memory to ensure that essential data is not unintentionally overwritten,
Real mode program (driver) operation instructions can address ANY space within the 1 megabyte of RAM. Typically, a driver/program running in real mode is one that needs to get to and use or update system data and can be trusted to know how to do this, however this may lead to such conflicts pointed out by NimRod.

I'll try your suggestions but it's strange for this to be happening now. I've had win98 installed with this m/b before and never had any problems with drivers.

The IDE controller may be listed in Device Manager as being disabled or having a resource conflict. This may occur on a computer with no IDE devices installed on the controller(s) , such as a SCSI-only computer or SCSI-IDE or a network-boot computer.

CAUSE
The status of an IDE controller is dependant on the BIOS. If there are no IDE devices connected to the controller, the BIOS may disable the controller. The controller may also be manually disabled in the BIOS. When the controller is disabled, any resources it normally uses are released to the system.

When a recognized device has no resources allocated to it, Windows 98 marks the device as disabled. This does not affect any other resources in the system.

Enable the secondary controller in the Bios if it got marked as diabled or attach an IDE device to it or leave it be if you don't a have anything attached to it. This is'nt really a problem per say but a way Win98 returns this type of status report.

Thanks for the help on real mode, Bleeding Edge + (sorry seanmo)

Now all i have to tackle is the **** conventional, upper, UMB and expanded memory
chapter that all come about with early technology before my time.

I think Bleeding Edge hit the nail on the head because I switched my IDE drives to the Primary controller and now win98 is happy.

Thanks

I'm having the same problem, too. I have a Redfox 430TX board with an AMD K-6 200, 64MB sdram(32x2), a Seagate ST32122A on primary and master, old Conner 270MB, Teac CD 56E on secondary with teac as master, and Win 95 OSR 2.0. All my bios settings for peripherals are on auto and enabled.
I've likewise installed the Intel Win 95 INF utility so win 95 can recognize my chipset. When I enabled bus mastering using the native driver I got an exclamation on my primary ide but my secondary's okay. I wanted to reverse the procedure but can't find a way. What gives? Is it my HD but my drive is not listed in the incompatible drives at Seagate website.
