Please Help!! I just installed a new Maxtor 6.4 G hard drive in a friend's computer and Windows98 says its a 1.98G. I used auto detect in the bios setup and it picked 6.4, and it shows 6.4 on the initial boot-up screen, but when I check drive properties, it says 1.98, and when I go to system information (under accessories) it also says 1.98. Any advice?
Set your HDD to LBA in the BIOS instead of AUTO. See if that helps.

Is it formatted in Fat16? If I'm not mistaken, unless it's been converted to Fat32, Windows will only see 2 gb partitions. Just a guess.

Think someone partitioned it wrong....
when he first fdisked it he must have said no to use large partitions...that's why it is only 2 gigs.

I have a similar problem. My Hdd 6.4GB Seagate Medalist is recognized as 2.0GB in some programs, like WWII Fighters instalation program, but Win98 recognizes the entire partition. When you right click on c: in the explorer the properties said that you have a 6.4GB. If you use Norton Disk Doctor it recognizes 2.0GB. By the way, I'm using LBA and FAT32.
