So much for a simple memory upgrade. I attempted to add another 16Megs of memory to my old but very precious Gateway 4DX-33V computer. Gateway told me to "DISABLE" the BIOS (Pheonix) SHADOW RAM when installing more than 16Megs of memory. When I did I lost COM2 port but I had 32Meg of memory. Went back to "ENABLED" SHADOW RAM and COM2 port started working again but I only had 16Meg of memory. Gateway is clueless. Can someone help me solve this problem? THANKS!!

Thanks for nothing every one. I guess I stumped all the technoids out there. I really needed the help and no one came to my rescue.

A BIOS update may help. Although finding it may prove to be a problem. Since, Gateway didn't (failed?) even make the suggestion, it might not be a viable solution.
But there is a chance.
Look here in the BIOS UPGRADE section, there is a listing for Gateway and there are some 486 BIOSes. Also search around the site for other sources.
