I installed a new HD in a Gateway P4D-66. The BIOS supports the 2.5 Gig HD I installed. I used a system or start up disk from another maching to get it up and running and be able to use the CDrom. I installed a new version of Windows 98. It installs all the files but when it restarts to finish all the drivers ect I loose the CDrom drive. It dosent even show up in the device manager. I have tried everything with no luck. The CDrom drive is a 2X speed but has allways worked fine.

ive had this problem on older systems that are not plug and play and do not have bus drivers.first have you tried going to my computer and add new hardware, choose select from list and see if yours is there if not let windows autotry.if this fails the easiest way is to load the drivers from the disc which should have come with your original system/cdrom.this will create a directory on your hard drive which will have the necessary info.it will also add lines to your autoexec.bat similar to the following c:\(directory)\drv\mscdex.exe /d:mscd001/v/m:? also in config.sys device=C:\(directory)\drv\(device driver) /D:mscd001/p:170,15 /v
these will be remmed out when windows finds the drive.try the website of the cd mftr for drivers if you dont have them
if you cant get the drivers then a new cdrom, complete with drivers, is very cheap.

You need my disk.. here is a link

With this disk you can do it all but for you just install the cdrom driver. Unless you want to do it all over again http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

You need to either install the latest busmaster driver for you hard disk controller, or use a non bus master driver on the channel that CD is on. I have had this exact problem, it is almost always related to bus master and the hard disk controller. Some CD players do not allow Windows to reconginize them with certain bus master drivers. Also, go to Tom's Hardware under storeage, you will find a solution for disabling bus mastering on one of the two IDE channels.
