just got the game last night and started playing it at 1280x1024...everything set to higheset. This wont work very well...has anyone been playing this for a while and found the best resolution, graphics settings combination for best blend of performance and visual quality on a similar system...

my specs..

XP2800+ @2.3Ghz (210*11)
1Gb Corsair XMS TwinX DDR400 @ 420Mhz
ABIT NF7-S Version2 Motherboard
ATI 9800pro

may save me a while messing about with different settings...

cheers

My system is very similar to yours... Your is just a touch more powerfull

I'm running:
EPoX 8RDA+ (nForce2)
2500+@3200+ (11x200)
2x512 Corsair XMS PC2700 OCed to PC3200 speeds @ 2.5,3,3,7
9800 Pro OCed to slighly over XT speeds

I'm running at 1024x768 with everything at very high. No AA or AF, hardware + eax sound.

Works great at those settings.

I have a 9800 pro also:

3.3 GHz P4
ASUS P4P800
1Gig RAM
128Mb 9800 Pro

I OC'd my card to around core/mem 390 using RadClocker with a Zalman VGA heatpipe and run the game at 1152 x 864 with everything else set to Very High. The game runs smoothly and looks great - much better since OC'ing by even such a small amount.

cool game...and graphics are about the best I've seen....its just a pitty that even with a pretty fast OC's system....using AA with all the graphics setting at very high just about kills the grahics card!
Would look totally sweet with 4xAA

Im using 1024x769x32 on high detail settings with 2xAF and skipping along at a fairly constant 85FPS

I ran it with 1024x768 with 2X on both AA and AF....and with my video card overclocked a bit and it flys......using a FX5900......( sweet looking graphics...)

Wish me luck..I am going to buy it at Best Buy tomorrow ( they were already out of stock with their sale)

I settled for 1024x768 with everything set at very high apart from the shaldows which are at medium setting. AA set at medium which looks at least 4X and also 4X AF.....and man....it looks....sweeeeeet! Usually try to play games at slightly higher resolutions....but this is about the best graphics I've seen in a game yet!

Now Far Cry is making a hit and I think it's just an opening 'ceremony' for Doom 3 or Half-life 2.

An appetizer for all FPS gamers!

Man I don’t know if I should get the game or not, I have been hearing allot about it over the last few weeks from you guys, I mean, what is the game about? How does the Graphics look? What type of Physics do they use in the game, is it DX9? Is it worth the Buy? I hope I’m not thread stealing here, I would just like some info on it from you guys seems you have the game. The only thing that’s stopping me from getting it is that I have not been following the story on the game.

Graphics = great even in a lower end card like mine. Things like fish schools, birds you can kill, damage skins, blood dispersing in water, etc.

Physics = excellent, rag doll type where you can roll barrels, bodies fall down stairs and hills, vehicles roll backwards etc

DX9 = requires DX9b but i don't think its implemented to all DX9. I believe it utilizes some DX9 attributes.

Longevity = Pretty long game. I casually play about an hour a night and taken about week or two and im near the end. Lot longer than Max Payne 2. Big cool factor is game is fairly open and you can wander and do things multiple ways.

Replay = Has multiple player and 6 difficultly levels.

Weapons = Has your run of the mill weapons and some unique ones like scoped auto weapons and zoom rocket launcher. Has the shake affect for realism.

One more thing. The AI is rediculously intelligent.

Example:
You're shooting at a group of mercs. You're getting a little ways in and a few kills. You think you're winning, so you start thinking that you haven't killed that many guys. Then you turn around and see 2 guys standing right behind you. They have snuck up behind you while you were busy killing the others.

Yes, the CPU flanked me! I don't ever remember any sort of AI in any game ever pulling off that kind of complex manuever. The AI in this game is very intelligent, even at the lowest difficulty. This game is a blast! :t

Crazycrusher...after reading alot of your posts and thinking I know what you like in a game....and the fact that you are pretty discreet and articulate about what to get...I would say ..go for it! This is a outstanding FPS type game.....
It is very good graphicly and gameplay wise..requiring some stealth and fast action combined....and lets you use all the transportaton ...( at least the earthly plains type)
I am trying to put my finger on what it resembles ( maybe C & C Renegade) ...or a Duke Nukem..but much better all around.

It plays very well and I found the game engine to be quite good....Indoor and ooutdoor graphical features are well done.

I am getting this for $30.00 and I am sure it will be on sale somewhere around this price.....can't go wrong

Best Buy has it marked for 39.99 and it is actually 29.99 at the register. Happened to me and I've read about it, so I didn't just get lucky. Excellent game.

I like the fact that it does require you to use your stealth abilities alot and some smarts....and considering the fact that you are not limited by where you can go....it gives you the odds in your favor...just hard enough to pigue your interest....

A store here in town was out for a couple of days..so I just went ahead and ordered the free delivery..which is on its way now...Hooya!

Well I have to say a pretty Awesome game, i downloaded the demo of it, and yep I have really takin a liking to it, I loved splinter cell, so Im used to playing using your stealth abilities, but man isnt that AI very smart, I couldnt hide from it, I had to try them out, gezz you snipe from a mile away and the buggers see you, fun game. Dosent it look really cool when you swim I mean the detail under the water really looks good, I have every thing set at High my screen at 1024X768 AA on High and it runs nice and smoth, like the AA cause I didnt have it on my TI4600 :) so I get to say I have my AA on lol :), I can see where you guys talked alot about the 9800Pro cause it really is a good card.

The stealth works, just it is too realistic for most gamers liking. The delay with the interface was done on purpose and scaled back in the final release. Sorry but a guy wearing white and red isn't going to be hard to see, even in shadows or in brush, that is a fact. The LOS is about right IMO and the AI is better than most, though in trying to do some things it can get horribly hung up, the pathfinding algorithms need tweaking. Only gripe from the stealth POV is that the world isn't active enough. No need to hide bodies, all but the mighest systems would prefer they disappear as soon as possible. Not to mention weapons that stay forever that you can't toss aside but won't arouse suspicion. Also there isn't a light you can shoot out or turn off (well there is one way only a couple times, but that is it).

Other than a crouch toggle, is there a reason to DL patch 1.1 if you own a 9800 Pro (Cat 4.4's) and also how large is it? Pardon my laziness, but dialup is a pain.

On the issue of the monkey-oid balancing (which is totally ridiculous), i was poking around some of the initialisation and config files for the demo a few weeks ago now and there are a number of editable settings availiable pertaining to how much damage wntities can inflict upon the player and vice versa, thus, i suppose one could manually edit the settings of the Trigens to make them a little less unbalanced

From all the posts about the difficulty in dealing with these things..in certain levels....I wonder if I will have as much trouble as the next guy.....generally I am pretty good with games ..better than average..but there are a few out there that get real frustraing...when you get to a certain point and you just can't get past it....

Thats why they make cheats and walkthroughs for gamers....but again I wonder if any cheats or walkthroughs are out yet for this.?
Its real new..but in the world we live in ..someone will probably be nice and do this for some of us if we have real problems....

For the life of me..I do not know how anyone could get through Spliner Cell..for instance without some form of walkthrough ...I guess I should admit I did use this..as the game does not give you a clue in so many areas..it would take forever to figure it out.and I hate forevers...no patience...but I do try and only after all hope is gone to I ask for help or use a cheat or walkthrough...

Someone Stupid

Splinter Cell is very linear with only a couple different ways to accomplish a mission if any other routes generally. Your only dif. options are your weapons. FarCry, due to the large open areas in much of the game thus far (I'm in ATL right now so I haven't played since friday) allows for tons more options. I can't say if this will help or hurt. You could add the quicksave cheat to the game. I don't know if it works, but I know there is one. Would help you out there greatly.

On Medium it can be challenging later on, so you MAY want to try Easy if you are worried. There are more enemies from medium to hard, that much I picked up - and they are better placed or you have more reinforcements which generally will come where you don't want them. I want to just start a game on realistic to see how hard it is as some are claiming to have beat it rather quickly on it. It may be possible, but if the difference is like btw medium and hard, then I seriously doubt there claims no matter how good they are. Saving and reloading 500 times a level isn't my idea of beating a game.

Yeah..I have been finishing up the game Team Sabre ( a BHD second addition ) and the game gives you just so many saves..so that you are forced to play it pretty honestly..but there are always times when I get extremely frustrated at a certain point in a game and find I saved in the wrong place...just to have to replay the level again or ??? Generally it is OK as it keeps you honest about playing the game with some smarts ...

Games such as Far Cry are nice to be able to roam and explore..where the rules are not so confining .....I am sure they did this on purpose to showcase the graphical wares of the game..more ....and it does allow for other aveenues of tactical strategy and re-evaluation...also, what is neat about this is that tis way you uget to see what all is involved and shown in the game ...nice!

I think the fact you can't save whenever you like in Far Cry is a welcome change. I mean, how many games have you played where you save at the point you have just aquired a load of health/bullets/weapons/armour/etc.? Doing so makes you less cautious as you go forward and gives you that comfortable feeling that you can go back if it doesn't work out on your first try. This for me detracts from the realism and level of immersion.

It seems to me that practically all modern fps games use this model and I feel it's become a bit stale. I've enjoyed playing Far Cry alot and for me part of this has been due to those moments when you are low on ammo and health and the game autosaves. The next level then presents a bigger challenge than it might otherwise do.

The Far Cry autosave feature was a brave step by UbiSoft and for me they deserve credit.

I installed one (1) slot fan from 3dcool # FC2002B in PCI slot #2

I turned both fans to intake and rotated them for the thermistors to share heat.

These temps are @ peak in Far Cry and Doom 3.

I removed the barrier in the CPU cover.

temps:

Intake: 81.3 F 27.4C
Left Fan 108.5 F 42.6C
Right Fan 100.7 F 27.4 C

This is a XPS 3.4 Extreme PCI-e
2GB DDR2 533
Radeon XT800/256
Raptor 74

took a little research- but with1 mod the stock machine is managable...

pls reply.

I have been running FarCry( playing it now again for the third time) , on 4X AA & AF on a FX5900 card and you are correct..

It uses all of my video card...and taxes it pretty good...but it sure looks gorgeous....

Some parts get a little boggy ..but that is like less than 1% of the game overall....

Since most of our high end cards( included the 6800's and 800XT's ) ...the clock speeds are what make a game run the smoothest...
My card..which I am extremely happy with and is most awesome overall....could use a bit more clock speed in some games..but not many....

The overall system and what you have in it..is the bigger factor..
