I just downloaded this utility called Powerstrip ...which I am sure alot of you already have and use ....was wondering if anybody has used it to overclock the FX5900 card or not.....

I upped the memory clock and engine clock some ..just to try out and ..so far ..so good...but I don't want to push it.....
Everything played good....ran it on Far Cry .the First Demo ( i am ordering this game in two or three days ),and it played great...and have my AA and AF at 2X....

What a great utility to have......

Too bad a utility hasn't come out for your CPU..that is this easy to use.....
Seems like a nice program and The magizine Maxixmum PC recommends it .

I would rather use Rivatuner or just Coolbits to overclock the nVidias.

you can download them here:

Coolbits is just a registry hack to add the clock frequency option to your video card properties. If that's all you want to do, try that first.

Rivatuner gives you more options.

I have Rivatuner....haven't really used it yet....and haven't got Coolbits....

The card I got runs real well without overclocking......I was more or less curious as to what it would do to the performance..if any.....

Alot of this overclocking thing is pretty new to me...and I was wondering how these cards did on overclocking them some.....

I get kind of uptight about tweeking the registry......as long as you can change it back as need be..then it is pretty safe..if you follow the directions of just a bit at a time and stability .....

I use coolbits because I don't like to install extra programs. All it does is unlock the clock frequency menu that is already in the nVidia software. it's pretty easy to use. just change the clock of the gpu and memory and then test. you'll have to go into the advanced adapter properties to see it. you can always set it back to defaults.

What kind of 5900 card is it? different manufacturer's cards will overclock differently. you might be able to OC to 5950 levels depending on who made the card and which ram modules they used.

Its a EGVA card.....very standard looking FX5900....with the typ. Nvidia Fan attacment on the one side.....

I might as well get Coolbits as well...then I'll have all three...

While I am at it..I always was wondering what the two clips are on the other side of the card.....are they possibly for an extra heatsink or fan attachment or what???

Ditto on the extra programs...I have a tendency to have alot of programs and stuff on my computer.....
I always start with a fresh install..then add my basic programs and after a few months...I wind up with about thirty or more.... I do go back through them and check what I need and have to have.....
My machine is running pretty sweet right now with all this stuff on it..but don't worry....I'll find a way to screw it up...

The best thing I have installed yet is the Mozilla Firebird browser and got rid of MSN and that stinking messenger pest....wow...they are kicking MS right in the rear with this.....

not too sure what those clips are for. maybe it's the same heatsink from their 256mb cards?

Maybe i could write them and ask them..good idea....

Also, while I am at it..I wonder if the specs on the ram modules and other can be gotten from them.....??

the only other way to find out the ram speed would be to pull off the heatsink. not good. you can just try bumping up the ram frequency a little at a time. maybe 10mhz to start then less as you get higher. you can push it to the max that the coolbits test will take and then back off a little to ensure stability.

Used just about everything under the sun when it comes to vid card overclocking, and im with Midknyte, Rivatuner is the way to go, Powerstrip is a decent enough application, with a long history, however it just feels a little too 'chubby' for my liking

Thanks alot guys....

Like I said ...my card works incredibly welll the way it is ...

I think the features on the other programs Rivatuner and Coolbits might be a little better at adjusting clock speeds ..ect..

I still have that info on how to turn your FX5900 into a FX5950....One of these days real soon I am going to do this.....as it also would be a good learning experience on how to tweek the bios..some.....
