Anyways, monitor first

I have an old 14" that is still good (Sceptre .28 etc.) it's going to go with the old p133 for my sister to use the net or for me and my friends to play Starcraft.

Anyhoo, I have about $300-$350 Cnd to spend on a monitor ( a 17")

I've found 2 that seem pretty good for the price:

Optiquest q71-2 ~$340
and
Komodo 17" (forgot the code) ~$300

they seem identical in stats.. any other monitor you could reccoment for a bargin but still good quality.. only reason I add Komodo in there is because it is a Sceptre brand and I've had good luck with them in the past /forum/smile.gif

In the monitor area, how important is dot pitch? I mean, most reviewers say it's really dependant on other factors (the image quality that is).. the monitors I listed there are .27.... .25 seem to cost quite a bit more.

My new computer I'm using is a Celeron 366-412 (no I haven't gotten it to 550mhz /forum/smile.gif), Xentor TNT2, etc etc etc

when I do get cable, it will include a ethernet card of some sorts. Thing is, I still will need to buy another card, and a hub.

Do you think I'd be best of buying a NETGEAR 5port hub/ 2 10bt cards/cables/manual... for about $100 or less... the 10/100 kit seems to cost a lot more... like $200

next question... for general gaming use, and maybe printer sharing, is the 10/100 really neccessary? 10mbit should be plenty for the cable.. it won't be seeing speeds that fast most of the time anyway...

it really depends if the 10/100 has better pings. heh. Though I doubt the difference between 10-15ms over LAN is that noticeable /forum/smile.gif

Also, I heard there was a way to connect 2 computers using the new HUB type connections (the phone cord type ones) without using a HUB.. like uplink or something.. he mentioned peformance might suffer a bit.. that true?

Heh, sorry for the barrage of questions and such. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

on the monitor, see

http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum4/HTML/000951.html

As to the dot pitch, don't forget that some are rated by stripe pitch instead. And yeah, other things are just as important, max resolution and refresh rate.
In the other thread I recommended Sony. Strongly believe in this monitor. Even other Trinitrons don't compare IMHO. (Sony markets the trinitron tube to other manufacturers, but NOT the supporting circuitry, or so I've been told.)

As to the network question, I have mine hooked up using ethernet coax setup peer-to-peer with no hub. Everytime I suggest this, somebody says what a rotten setup it is even though it works great for me. So, to avoid the flames, I'm not suggesting it. /forum/smile.gif

You can get your network cards, hubs, and cabling here http://www.abilitycomputers.com/ if you want. You can get the two Realtek 10/100 PCI Network Cards, and a 8-Port 10mps Hub for around $50.00 Plus freight. I've sold a lot of these without any problems with the cards or hubs. This is a great setup for a home or small business network. The mid size business envirnoment is different.

Unless the card, cabling, and hub support 100 MPS, you will only achieve the 10 MPS rate. And for a small network, that'll be just fine.

Hope it helps.
