I have a LT Winmodem and I just reformatted and installed Win98. I left the modem out until after the install, powered down, installed the modem and was greeted with the "found new hardware" routine. Followed all instructions to install the drivers, and it looked as if everything went well, (including the wave driver). Upon going to verify the modem by going to control panel-modems-diagnostics, selecting the modem (on com three) and hitting "more info", I get a "Com already open" message and nothing shows in the information window.

This is fresh after the OS install, and I only have com 1 setup in the bios. I've tried removing the modem via System Properties, Device Manager tab and hitting refresh and trying again, (with no luck) and tried removing it thru Modems in Control Panel, (same result).

I have been doing some reading on this and have looked for the "uninstall winmodem" program sometimes mentioned, on the CD, but there is none.

Any ideas?? Thanx in advance.

(I know how some of you feel about win modems, but it's what I, and several others I know, have... and they are worried about installing win98 for just this reason.)

I have had two or three Lucent winmodems, and a pctel or two as well at work, and all I can tell you is that you HAVE to find that uninstall software, on the net, or disk or somewhere, because otherwise you're removing nothing, also try going into regedit and removing any lucent strings as well. Also, that modem has to plug and play, and work that way you can't change many if any settings on it, try adding a com2 though first, and making sure 1 and two and your uart is enabled int he bios. One time mine half way installed, and I coudln't figure it out forever, even w/ tech support, until I found one day in device manager a little exclamation mark that said pci device, it didn't even say modems I removed it, and it booted up fine and installed correctly...but yes they are pains and can conflict with other parts of your system...

A friend of mine had this problem with an LTWin modem. He purchased it from a company and had some problems with a Virus that was shipped with the system. To make a long story short, after we reinstalled Win98, we found that the CD that shipped with the computer had the incorrect modem drivers. I took forever to get the actual name of the company that created the Modem, it ended up being GVC, I downloaded those drivers and the next time we installed the modem, it worked perfectly. I seems that even though it a modem is identified as a LTWin Modem, it the drivers are specific to the manaufacturer.
I hope this helps.

Are you sure that IRQ 10 isn't being used by, or reserved for, some other device? My LT Winmodem uses that IRQ, presumably all do, and it works fine. Check out this FAQ. It has links to sites with the newest drivers, I do believe. Good luck.
