Okay...here's my story. Maybe someone can help me... I am a tech for a large company. We create new Ghost images of our workstations whenever a new hardware platform is released to us. I typically adapt previous images to conform to new hardware (integrated NICS, Sound Cards, Video, etc.). We use NT 4.0 partitioned initially FAT. Because we create and save all of our images in Ghost 4.0 format-- we have the option to compress the image (FAT is the only way that this can be done). We later convert to NTFS with a simple batch file that runs one time upon system startup (and reboot). NTFS is necessary because we need to set permissions on subdirectories in order to prevent over-zealous "clickers" from deleting critical files saving ME from future headaches!!!
Okay...now that I've setup the story... here's the problem. I've noticed on this critical image, (50 workstations to be setup and deployed this week with it), that after conversion to NTFS several desktop and Programs Menu shortcuts are HOSED. But here is the strange thing...the properties show the correct path and the target can be found. When I click the shortcut, the hardrive spins up but seems to search for quite some time (too long). After about two minutes the app launches. It seems like they are broken links or perhaps the NTFS conversion fragmented the drive severely creating this huge lag. Once the shortcut launches, it is then OKAY...as if it found the target. It doesn't matter if I'm logged onto the workstation locally or on the domain. It also doesn't matter if I am a simple user or an administrator. The first time I click on the shortcut (about 5 shortcuts total that I created for this image) it lags. The extremely odd thing is I narrowed the problem down to only occurring after the NTFS conversion-- I removed the conversion *.bat file from startup on one test and tried the shortcuts...they worked perfect.
So...I apologize about the length of this post...but if anyone can help-- I sure could use some. BTW-- I am going to try a 3rd party shareware prog called Shortcut Doctor which attempts to fix broken links. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!
