On Friday I had a balance of $2.25. I deposited a check for $200. It cleared today as expected, and I withdrew $120 from a machine to pay some people back. Looking at the slip, it said I had a balance of $482.25. I have no idea where the other $400 came from.

After I paid back my debts, I went to the machine again and withdrew $80. Now it says my balance is $122.25. I have no idea how I 'lost' $280 in about 20 minutes. I just checked my account online and it shows a balance of $2.25, as of last Friday.

Any idea what's going on? Anything I should do?

I can guarantee you this one won't. But I'll call tomorrow. It's a "First Community Bank" in a small town in a rural area.

Maybe some older checks you wrote took a while to clear.

Maybe they deposited someone elses deposit to your accoutn. Found their error and corrected it. Maybe you can't add/subtract:x

Perhpas ATM balance are never 100% accurate, and shouldn't be trusted as such :)

Didn't get a chance to call 'em today, I'll try to tomorrow....in the meantime I checked my balance online, and it is current as of yesterday prior to my withdrawals, showing $202.25.

They prob. put an overdraft on your account and its not showing up on the ATM reciept or online.

there's your problem right there.. your accnt number is wrong!! :p

Checks you wrote probably were cashed later than you anticipated and are coming around a bit late.. ATM balance is not to be trusted as they are more often than not, inaccurate.. they are really only there so that you have a record of deposits and withdrawls.. see if your tiny bank has a online service you can sign up for.. I check my statements online all the time and they are pretty much as current as what a banker will tell you..

good luck

As I've already said, I've been checking my balance online. Problem is, it shows me today what my balance was at the end of yesterday. I haven't written any checks either, and I never had that mysterious $400 that showed up in the first place. Oh well. I checked my history online and it showed nothing in regard to these strange events. Maybe the machine was doing typos.

As previously stated it could have been your overdraft included in the one that had $400 extra. Just ask the bank if your account has an overdraft on it.

I tried it over and over for several hours until the police showed up and hauled me off...

I guess you must have had a typo in there....
