I started playing Call of Duty on my 2.4ghz AMD, 512 mb RAM, 9200 Radeon 256 mb RAM, running XP. AT first it ran beautifully at a high resolution with everything set on high or at least medium. Then it just froze and there was nothing I could do...not even get back to windows or ctrl-alt-del. Next time I start the game in safe-mode, it freezes after just a few seconds of playing and I'm forced to restart.

I've had problems before with this stupid graphics card, but what's going on?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

2.4ghz AMD
There is no such chip? Is it a 2400+? What size and brand power supply (PSU) do you have? Try testing your memory...

Good luck! :D

yeah it's a 2400+.

I don't even know what size and brand power supply (PSU) is?!?

And thus, we have one of the answers as to why god gave us eyes, so we can take a look ;)

Are you saying you don't know what a power supply is? It is what powers the computer.

model no: ISO 400

Max power output: 300W

That doesn't tell us much? :( I would guess it is your PSU, RAM (have you tested the RAM?), video card, video card drivers, sound card, or sound card drivers.

Good luck! :D

So basically, about the only thing you can rule out is the monitor :D

First thing i'd do is run a program like the Prime95 torture test. This will rule out wether or not its processor instability. There are several torture tests it offers. One that tests the RAM and ones that don't test much of the RAM... I'd first start off with the one that doesn't, if you can run that for atleast an hour or so, you're good. Then run the test again, checking the option that tests RAM. If you can run that for a good hour or so with no errors or lockups, then you can rule out a CPU or RAM problem.

If you fail either one, it could be a PSU, CPU or RAM issue. Start there at let us know what happens.

Also be sure you have the latest chipset drivers, sound drivers, and video drivers.

OK thanks...I'll run the test today and let you know how it went later.

When you fire up CoD there's a lot at play in addition to the video card. Follow Ramon's advice and thoroughly test the general stability of your system and individual components if need be.

You can also take a look at other applications that are running in the background using the task manager. Try shutting down and ending unecessary processes before running CoD.

I did the test (Prime95 torture test) and it gave me no errors and said that everything is running fine. Yesterday I exchanged the card for the same model card and at work it ran fine (at work I have a different monitor, cables etc.) but when I tried to play at home then it just crashed again??? Big enigma?!?

By the way...what does "rsfnatik" stand for (delija???)?

In that case make sure you have updated drivers for everything as Direct1 said. Chipset drivers, audio and video drivers. If all those are updated and you're still having the same problem. I'd recommend swapping out that powersupply

Hmm, so you've isolated the problem to your system then. You can try running memtest and thoroughly check each DIMM. You can also look at running the extended diagnostic tests for your hard drive. Do you have another board you can swap into your machine? Have you checked for any blown/leaking caps... Personally, i'm thinking this may be more of a s/w issue tho... if any of my suggestions above were accurate you would think Prime98 would have found something.

It's a vehicle reference... Subaru Impreza "RS".

Have you tried running Memtest86 yet? CoD is VERY finickey about RAM, even tight timings or overclocking can cause it to throw a wabbler, if i wer eyou i woudl try setting the RAM speeds and timings back to default and disabling any RAM related performance boosting options such as 4-Way-Interleave in the BIOS and then see if the troubles persist

im having the same issue but not just with call of duty but alot of games. I have completely cleaned out anything to do with ati off my computer and reinstalled the drivers. i have plenty of power (400w psu) ram comes out good with mem test and im am just running the stress test i have a powercolor 9600pro with 256mb on board. i get complete lockups the video dies on the monitor and the sound cuts out. my motherboard is not touching anything to be shorting out and i completely cleaned the dust out of the machine. the only thing i can think of is my mother board only have a agp 4x slot but the card is supposed to be backwards compatible. The only thing i have heard of that i cant try is turning the fastwrite on in the display settings which i heard can fix this.
I have updated the agp drivers as wel to their newest and flashed the bios to the newest. I if anyone has some other suggestions that would be great

Ps sorry about the long post lol

i may have a sloution do you have onboard ac 97 sound? i disabled mine in the bios and it seem to be working fine (crossed fingers) try that and let me know.

edit:

i may have made a mistake here i forgot i also disabled the secondary display that the drivers put in device manager that may have also done it give them both a try and let me know

edit 2:

it was definately the onboard sound on mine.
