the battlefield vietnam website has a page called "downloads"...my heart raced when i saw that, but alas, it is just an empty page...maybe they are getting ready to put a few files up there...

There will always be patches. So whats up with the video card? I have a 9800 pro and everything runs pretty well with just a rare skip or studder. Hardly unplayable...if it were I'd surely have had more sleep lately :)

They have patches and such now for server stuff and a new Mod tool to add vehicles and make Map changes.. sometimes they are confusing to me also,,as I look for just an ordinary patch....

The only real thing that bugs me in these games is when you get done playing a certain game with some server..it immediately goes into a reload ..like the game is starting over and then quite often disconnects on its own and loads some map or server I did not choose myself....this is very annoying..and i find myelf hitting the escape key like a madman to get out of this loop...

Sometimes and not very often it will load and play the same server....I think there is an auto setup and disconnect feature in the game that is beyond ones control and they automatically find a map where an open position is.....sure looks like it to me..

Check Fileplanet or Fileshack for the latest mods...also...

All in all ..after I upped the graphic settings some.. the game plays pretty good most of the time now...depends on the servers I think and their connection and settings or speed..

Baby Arm,

The readme for battlefield vietnam talks about known hardware incompatibility with the radeon 9800 pro. It basically says that it doesn't support the things the card can do, which is evident when i play the game. Textures look blotchy, giant "green things" appear and disappear when flying helis and planes, and my gun models and text on the screen will just disappear and reappear at random...

...not quite the best release, EA better patch this soon...i wanna play! :)

Try turning off AA and AF. Or turn AA on without shadowing.

Hmm ok maybe I don't know what i'm missing then but as far as I can tell the game looks fine, better than bf1942. I don't notice any blotches or strange things happening, maybe things are going to fast for me to notice, who knows. If they can make it look better with a patch, great. if not, I'll just continue playing happily :)

This game generally runs better with some AA and AF on..as it increases the speed some due to the increased amperage for the shaders.....
If I run my FX5900 card without all the goodies..the graphics look pretty muddled ( not very clear ) ..and the game slows and freezes some....
With the settings at 2X or 4X on both..it looks alot better and runs smooth....
Gnerally from what I have read so far..the only card that might have some problems is the ATI Raedon 9800..... for reasons the gamemaker describes....

This game has alot of voocoo graphics....

Like i said before..my friend has my old GE Force 4 MX 420 card and it runs great for him....go figure...

wow news to me that turning on AA and AF could increase performance. That makes no sense to me as I thought the card had alot more work to do per pass with those on. Heck sounds good to me I might try turning it on too.

Technical data and specs. are so different for all the cards out there ..that it is often times very hard to know what settings to use for what...hence the options on all good cards to up the settings and increase the visual so that the graphics come in better.... often times this will make a program run and look much better..and with some apps. ,depending on the game itself and its specs. it might run worse...

Take the new game Far Cry..for instance..for some reason if you up the adjustments too much ...the game freezes for some users.... I think it depends on what shaders and textures a game has ..that determines how the card will work ..also, the game engine has alot to do with it..as that is the vehicle that runs the game...if they are bleended well together..then chances are you will ber able to run cards at higher settings...

BF Vietnam has alot of intense graphics ..and needs a card with good pixel shaders and such..to play well.

I have the highest end hardware throughout..,and I even get some quirks with this game..probably because its new and might require some patches or adjustments....

I found the actual quote from the BF:V readme file...

VIDEO CARD DRIVERS
- It is highly recommended to go to your video card manufacturer's
website and download updated drivers for your card.

ATI 9800 PRO
- Battlefield does not support some of the hardware features of the
ATI 9800. If you experience strange graphical anomalies with this card,
exit Battlefield Vietnam and bring up the display properties on your desktop.
Click on Settings -> Advanced -> 3D. In the 3D settings for
Direct3D make sure the "Use custom settings" box is not checked.
If it is, make sure the "Application Preference" checkboxes for
anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering are turned on.

I guess i am one of the unlucky ones whose "graphical anomalies with this card" make it pretty much unplayable until it is patched...that is, if i want to play w/AA and AF...which is why a bought a R9800 pro in the first place :)

You aren't alone, just bought this game yesterday and like you I have a 9800 Pro and this game has some serious graphical issues.
Hopefully EA will get off thier @ss and rectify this as this is unacceptable.

This is a very interesting and imformative analysis about the graphic cards and their properties....

In a game like BF Vietnam ( remember its just one game ) , it looks like Open GL is an issue along with the way the pixel shaders are displayed..... don't fret as most ATI cards seem to be better at AA and AF overall in most other games.....

Realistically though..the properties and all that we see with the naked eye...are in reality smalll differences to me...once you get ahold of a higher end card.....the quality and operation are pretty even to a standard naked eye.....

The real changes will occur with the next genration of cards..using the 64 bit architechture.....or so it seems..this allows for a better testbed structure to enhance these properties...( AA and AF) )

Hi,
I have the same problem HIS version of the 9800xt. I can turn off all aa settings but the counters and the map get all garbled. They better release a patch soon or i'm gonna take the game back. You wouldn't buy a car with a bad "paint job" so we should we buy games with "bad paint jobs". I'm sick and tired of hearing the excuse "its the card manufacturers fault". The cards available, they should test it. Hell give me the Beta of the game and i'll test it on my system FOR FREE. I'll even go out and buy the game afterwards because i'll know that it all works. I pay $90 AU for a game that doesn't function as it's supposed too. For one of the most anticipated games releases of the year it is very dissapointing. (Good job to Crytek and Ubisoft for their fixed up release of Far Cry - the 9800's had issues with the demo of this game too but it got fixed for the actual release).

You stated your case well.. I know I would be very dissapointed and like you...I think you should take the game back..and wait until they resolve this issue..before buying it again......
I had to update the drivers for the FX card and only then dio it operate OK and fixed the issue....I often wonder if sometimes these game makers seem to rush issues ...and maybe not test all things properly ..before releasing the game..
They are only human and make some errors....but with my card the game plays pretty good and the graphics are good also..no apparent issues...
This could be grounds for a basic lawsuit ..being that they never openly mentioned up front the issues with ATI owners..as its odd .because at least two thirds of the gaming community use ATI cards.....there goes half their profits right there....

Baby Arm - Truly you are a god amongst men. The new drivers actually work. (Although the wood on some of the footbridges still have an unnatural sheen to them, but I can live with that.)
Cheers man.

What exaclty is it that y'all turned on/off with the new drivers to notice such an improvement? I've got shadows off, AF off, an AA @ 4x. 1024x768x32

I still say that this is more of a game problem that a driver problem.

Baby Arm
04-09-2004, 09:03 PM
I didnt turn anything on or off. Installing the drivers is what helped. Man this game looks nice with the aa and af on :)

I'm running 4x aa and 8x af right now and its running good
I think shadows and all of that are on too.

What in the world kind of system are you running it on?!

Nothing terribly fancy. Its a xp2500 @ 3200 with a abit nf7-s mobo, 9800 pro, and 1 gig memory. I splurged on the memory but i think it was worth it. I knew my job was going down the drain so I upgraded while I still had money, and of course for half life2

When i first played it i had aa and af turned on. It caused a lot of graphical issues. Gun disappearing and suchlike. I turned the aa and af to application prefference and the problem went away.

So the new ATI drivers fix that problem. Good. I like a bit of aa and af in the morning.;) 9800pro btw

Another problem for any Audigy 2 users. It seems the using Creative AUX settings causes problems with sound. I have certainly noticed this. It can be fixed by keeping the setting on "Miles positional audio" Might be another fix for the patch.

All in all this game looks really good. It may be a number of months before it's patched to perfection. Look at all the BF1942 patches there were.

On an unrelated note. Desert Combat 0.8 is on the Horizon.

M9 Barreta model and skin
Patriot missle system
New map: First Light
Stealth F-117
Note the patriot missile system...is this going to work akin to its substituted real world role of bringing down Scud missiles?
who knows...but an exciting prospect non the less.

Rumoured to be included are various weapons and vehicles such as-
a new hummer. (humvee)
a new Iraqi shotgun.
Skins which had been ommited from 0.5 to 0.7.

Originally I read they were not going to release any updates..ect....,but take heart,as I did read from the main site for the game that alot of Mods and updates will be coming forthwith.....

Don't be fooled, they knew that too many people have bought this game and want more...and its just good buisness, not to mention it puts enormous pressure on them to keep coming up with other stuff ..

Who knows what goes on in the mind of the makers..as maybe they get tired of the same ole thing and need a breather....

I was so thrilled when I go this game ..and after playing it for awhile now.....it has already gotten a bit tiring to me....and really does not seem as novel as it did once it came out....The trailers for the game looked better than the game....

My basic quirk with it right now is that it would be more fun if you could get to play with more servers..instead of normally just a few... the same people probably hog the same servers... and they should have made it so that there is some indicator of which side you will get to play...instead of getting in a game and having to play the enemy.....just a waste of my time waiting for all the load stuff....just to have to reload again....
They should also fix the part when a game is over....it takes you back to the load screen if the server does not start the same game over....the way it is now it loads automatically to somewhere not chosen by me...unless I make a very quick exit....
Last night ,can you believe it I found a couple ..very rare! ) that I could play again after the game was over..which is exactly how they should ALL work.....

All in all, the game looks fine graphicly...and depends on good servers to run smoothly...which alot of people should keep in mind

And.....for all those servers that keep kicking people off for no apparent reason....FORGET YOU! we all paid the same money to play......be fair and lighten up....

i also have a problem like yours but it not as bad. i have notice that when im playing it kinda choppy and glitchy. i was running it a 2X aa. when i ran it a 4X i got major giltchy and artifacts. the graphics areso much better with 2X on so i stil play it with that even though it is alittle glitchy. i also hope they come out with a patch soon.

i just got my 9800pro and its a sweat card!
