Hi there,
I'm trying to upgrade from Win95 (version 40.00.950B) to the Win 98 but I'm using a non-upgrade Win 98 version CD. It tells me that I have an earlier version of windows and that I need to use the Win98 Upgrade inorder to install Win98. Is there anyway I can install Win98 without using the Win98 upgrade?
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
TomT

Well if I remember right you need to boot from a floppy that you have equipped with attrib command so you can attrib -h -r -s your win.com file and then delete it. Make sure your boot disk is a cd boot disk. Then change to cdrom drive letter "d:" for example and run setup.I'm pretty sure that is the only file you need to delete. This way you won't lose your other programs that you have installed. You will probably have to reassociate them with win98 though.
Anyone else: Did I forget anything?

You'd be far better off if you reformat hard drive then do clean install of Win98. I know it's a lot of work to reintall everything but it's worth it - believe me. Be sure to have a backup of any important data.

Do as Cyclops says.
Invest a little time now. Later, you'll have less problems and won't even know it.
A clean install is best.

Too bad Thomas. All you have to do is rename Win.com to Win.bak, boot, and install.
Works every time.

Thanks Everyone,
I reformatted my HD and just did a clean install. I didn't have too many problems.
Thanks,
