IE4 and Outlook Express

I was playing with Outlook with Microsoft Office 97 and now when I go to use Outlook Express it always asks me if I wasnt to make it the default mail client. I click yes, and it never takes it. I can go to tools>options>make outlook express your default mail program and check the box all day. It never sticks. When I go to control panel>internet and try to set the defaults there, Outlook Express isn't even in the list for mail programs anymore. But it's set as the default mail client. Did playing with Outlook mess it up? And if so, how in the hell do I get back to normal??

simply, reinstall it
