I cranked up my computicker today and the welcome screen and the letters on the desktop looked like Iraqi. This happened to me in W98 before I upgraded to XP Home and I corrected it by changing the font..Surprise, surprise, I dont know how to do it. The Advanced Appearance Font feature is grayed out and there are no fonts in the windows font folder.

There are no fonts displayed on the desktop. You can go to "Display Properties" and "Appearances" and change the fonts in each element that uses fonts, such as menu and icon and so forth.
If you just want larger fonts, you can go to "Display Properties" and "Appearances" and click "font size" near the bottom.

I was tired when I read your message last night. You turned on the computer and the display was borked. I suppose I'd start by reinstalling the graphcis drivers. Can you give a little info about your system?

Your Fonts folder should not be empty. I would suspect a virus, hacker or another user playing tricks on you.

I agree it is strange and I am not yet familiar enough with XP to know what it is. There are no other users. This happens each time it starts, the icons are there but the ID shown under them is in Iraqui-looking symbols.I can right click on the desktop and left click on the bottom line of the displayed box and it opens the Display Properties window. I change the theme and it repairs the desktop until I shutdown. When it restarts, we are back to the foreign stuff.
If I remember correctly, this happened to me once before in W95 or 98 and I finally changed the font and it was cured. Problem is now I can't change the font.

Microsoft says that to reinstall the fonts I need to reinstall the OS.
I have had a time getting XP to fly right and am concerned that reinstalling XP will mess up some of my component software.I can't believe that there is no way to separately install the fonts.
I thank everybody for their help. My next move is to reinstall, which I hate to do.
No guts-no glory!

OK. I reinstalled XP and the problem is solved, at least for now.
