Hey there,
I just installed Win98 on a newly formated drive. I was using Win95 without any problems but now none of the games I play will start: Unreal 2.20, Quak II, Theif, Myth II, AOE. I installed all my vedeo drivers for by Matrox Mystique and the Matrox m3d cards. I run the diagnositics and they indicate there's no problems but when I try to run any on of these games, my screen goes blank for a second and then just returns to my desktop. It doesn't give my any errors and windows runs fine but my games just don't start. I reinstalled half the games and they still dont' work. Does anyone have any suggestions???

Thanks,
TomT

sounds like a video driver\directx issue. Reinstall the latest version drivers for your video card and reinstall directx. The latest version here is 6.1.I have heard some people complaining about 6.1 but I have had no problems.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the DirectX-based program changes the default refresh rate your display adapter sends to the monitor.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Change the refresh rate or
Reduce the hardware acceleration of your display adapter thru the Advanced Display Properties Setting.
AND/OR
Double click on your C: drive icon.
Open Program Files.
Open the Directx folder.
Open the Setup folder.
Double click on DXDiag.
Take a note of the directX version. If it's not 6.1 download it thru MS Update later.
Click on the more Help Tab.
Click Override.
Enter your preferred and/or current supported refreash rate.
Press OK.
Now go back to the Setup folder within the Directx folder.
Double click the Dxsetup icon.
Place a check in the box to enable Hardware Acceleration if your card support this.
