Ive got my new 40g hd and i want to use it for back ups only to image my master drive 80g maxtor. running windows xp

Is it possible to partition the backup drive into 2 sections so that i can use the remainder to add just other files to as and when ?

This way if i need to restore an image i will then have all my other files and downloads on the second part of my back up drive that wasnt included in the first image if you see what i mean. :) (i dont want to keep makin back up every week)

Is it better to use fdisk to partition the drive or use drive image 2002 ?

Because when i went to partition the drive today using drive image it gave me about 18gigs to use for a back up image of my maxtor And the remainder about 19g as spare.

I noticed that the first part was 18gigs as FAT 32 and spare would have been formatted in NTFS 19gigs.
Maxtor is 80gb FAT 32

Thanks for your help

What OS? If 2000/XP. you can partition and format it in Windows (as long as it is a slave HDD). If 2000/XP got to Start > Run > type diskmgmt.msc > Click Ok. You can partition as you wish.

Good luck! :D

Its windows xp and its partitioned as FAT32 as slave drive. if i want to partition the drive using windows xp,

it only gives me the choice of NTFS for the second part and windows FAT32 as the first bit of the disk,

does this matter ? havin both on one drive

Any partition over 32 BG's will be NTFS. You will have to make your partitions smaller than 32 GB if you want to use FAT32. You can have FAT32 and NTFS partitons -- XP will see them both.

Good luck! :D

So would i be better off partitioning the drive into 2 sections of say 19gigs each this way i can have my windows xp back up and i can still use the other part of the disk for any other files or important stuff i want to save

Just a thought or shall i stick with the one partition ?

Seems a waste having a 40g hd and only using about 8gs of it just to save a backup oon, when i could partition it into 2

Thanks for your help direct1

I would do say a 10 GB partition and then the rest (probably around 27 - 28 GB) for the other partition. 10 GB's is more than enough for your Ghost image.

Good luck! :D
