Hi... I just bought a Realtek PCI NIC, and while I had no trouble installing it - Win98 detected it beautifully and installed the drivers - Win98 takes a LOT longer to boot than it used to. I'm assuming it has to do with the Windows Log On or whatever, but I'm not sure; the Log On dialogue comes up everytime I boot, so... how can I get rid of this? Is it possible? My friend's got an NIC in his machine, and I don't remember seeing it on his machine. (He's currently not available, or I'd just make the call. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif) Is this whole experience normal? Other than the long boot time, everything else appears to be just fine - no conflicts, etc....
Thanks for any help.

You need to assign a ip address to the machine. Win98 is looking for a server to dynamically assign one..

Did you know the 98 Realtek diver is buggy ?
You might not want to use it. Here is a link about it

I just reread you post.. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/redface.gif
You can use Tweak ui to log on to the network automatically and not have to mess with the login box..

Or set your network to Windows login.
Also you can type echo off and it won't write to your boot screen

I downloaded the updated driver from Realtek... Thanks... I really appreciate that. Now... can I just use the Update Driver option in device manager to make the switch?

Use as few protocols as possible, get rid of IPX and NETBUI if you dont use them. Remember, Windows will take the time to load them into memory on boot. Also, it will always take longer to load a networked computer, no matter what.
