Since it's a fantasy system, why not go all out and get that Seagate Barracuda 50GB Ultra 2 wide SCSI hard drive?

And dual 600 ATHLONs (phuck intel)?

And instead of a 21" LED falt-panal monitor, get a video card w/ tv-out, and hook it up to one of those huge $8000 flat HDTVs?
That would be the bomb. /forum/smile.gif

1. How about an operating that never crashes or locks up

2. It will cache up to 2GB or ram

3. Raid 5, hmmmm what do you do for a living?

4. I really don't like those JAZ drives.

5. I think a fork lift will handle it.

Well the rest of it is fine nilknarf.

Dual processors, hmmmmm....

For caching 2 GB of RAM you need NT.
not even Linux caches that much /forum/frown.gif Perhaps you could use some other exotic *NIX. Then use this ultimate system as the server node of this bad boy:

http://www.genetic-programming.com/

Also, hows about SCSI-3 instead of SCSI-2. And ditch that T3 for an OC48: 1.3Gbps!!

Thats about as ultimate as it gets in x86 arcetecture. Replace all the CPUs with Alphas and then it's something that you can call ultimate.

Shouldn't be more than a million or 2 /forum/smile.gif

Even better...

Scratch x86 & Alpha architecture and lets go straight to a Cray!

Alpha based Beowulf-cluster supercomputers have a much better price/performance ratio than standard mainframe supercomputers. You can get double the performance for the same price, plus you have a choice of OS.

Since you are going first class why not use a Xerox DC40 color laser printer? Bangs out 40 full color 8 1/2 X 11 copies per minute, auto duplex, 11 X 17 capability.

ANTONIO E GUERRA - once the new kernal comes, you can buy this operating system called Linux(or download for free realy) to put on your dream computer.

Thanks, killerbug! I am running Linux in a dual boot platform. I love Linux Mandrake 6.0 because it offers great possibilities as an operating system. Unfortunately in our daily business, our users and customers are not familiar or interested in learning something like that. The dream machine will have linux and be capable of running linux's and all the windows' applications at the same time and without decrease performance. There is another operating system: Beos and it runs in the Pc platform. That' s really the Dream!

Antonio, your dream is already a reality. It's called VMWare: www.vmware.com (http://www.vmware.com)

This program allows you to run ANY OS from a window on the desktop of either your NT or Linux computer. Just check it out. It allows you to run any OS within another OS without reboots!

Thanks, Dominus! I think one of the creators was with Leo Laporte at the Screensavers.com (Zdtv.com). In that interview, the guy was running linux and wordperfect from a distant location and it looked like real time.

Personally I would go with the 8way Xeon from penguin computing http://www.penguincomputing.com

8 500mhz xeons 2mb cache each
128mb L3 cache
2gig ram
Raid controler 64mb cache
7 18gig SCSI, in a raid config.
32x SCSI CD rom
Yade yade yada...

Of course it would run Linux and VMWare or Wine to emulate Windows when needed.

Since this is fantasy, get about 30 or 40 of these to run a Beowulf-cluster over a 100mb network...

Then go out and buy Cable and Wireless (MCI) and just all the Internet Feeds you want.

I have to applaud all your dreams about top of the line hardware but I really want for Christmas' wish list: an operating system that does not crash as often as Windows. To create animation, 3-d Studio Max and Soft-Image will be a must! In addition, I would love one of Red Rage'system from Penguin Computer. They are really beautiful. Nice taste! Hope Santa Claus is taking notes...

Hi to all, specially you Nathan ...

WOW!!! I love it ... You guys just described the perfect system as found at Bill Gates 130 million dollar house ...

But you only get to "beta" test the six-pack model known as Windozze98 ... LOL
