I have an Athlon 800 that had W98 on it for about two years. I got the urge to upgrade so I installed XP Home Upgrade. Essentially everything works except my Fijifilm digital camera and my Palm m500. I removed and reinstalled both programs and updated to XP drivers, but neither one works, i.e. I cannot transfer the pictures to the computer and I cannot transfer data between the Palm and the computer. Both worked great with W98.
I called the Fuji guy and he said the problem is caused by installing the XP UPDATE rather than the full original version. I called Microsoft and a nice Indian lady told me that the UPDATE could not have caused the problem and she transferred me to a gentleman who said he would be in touch.

Any ideas?

I agree that the upgrade could have messed up some of the usb driver stack. I would uninstall all usb devices in safe mode (Press F8 repeatedly while booting), shutdown, unplug all USB devices, and boot back up. Let XP install the drivers for the USB root hubs.

Make sure you have the latest version of Palm Desktop from the palm site for your PDA. Install palm desktop. Plug in your Palm.

If it doesn't work, open device manager press the Hot sync button and see if you get an Unknown device. If so try to update the drivers for it.

Repeat for your Fuji camera. XP wiull identify a device and always use the same driver for it. When you upgraded the devices could have been recognized incorrectly and now they will not install the proper drivers.

If this fails I would erase your computer and start with a clean install. Make sure you back up first!!!!!

I have a problem where a windows 2000 computer installs a Windows 98 drivers for a Sony Clie. This messes everything up and I can not get the system to use the Clie.

They are both USB devices, right? You are also supposed to install the software for them before connecting, most likely. By upgrading Windows with them both connected, you sort of broke the rules. You plugged them in before installing the software.

Unplug both devices, uninstall the software for them and remove the devices in Device Manager. Leave them unplugged and repair XP:

Afterward, install both devices exactly according to instructions.

Thank you both for the prompt replies. I will try tonight to correct the problem and let you know how it turned out.

Since you upgraded to XP, you might need to install Service Pack 1 for XP.

I have been prowling through XP, trying to understand the tools etc. that it provides. I figured out that my problem is not caused by the update, by W98 residual drivers or drivers at all. In retrospect I realize that the problem was that while XP was recognizing that a USB device was connected and showing it as a drive in the device manager , it was not recognizing it as a device with removeable storage. Once I figured how to get the camera to display as a device with removeable storage, the camera connections and downloads work as they should and so does the Palm.
