is plextor all that is made up to be? is it really that great for the extra 20 bucks? whats the real advantage over the lite on?

i dont know which dvd rom to get. the lite-on isnt all that great i hear, but its got good ratings. i thought pioneer made good ones but newegg doesnt have any. people have said that liteon will not read lightly scratched cds. i need a drive that will pick up scratch cds. anyone have refuting statements or suggestions?
samsung? sony? msi?

Plextor's are good. I like Lite On as a cheaper alternative. While I'll agree with some here that say the Lite On drives seem cheaply made -- they work. I've used a lot of them for the past year or so with not one that does not work.

Good luck! :D

LiteOn and LG are good general use drives. However, I consider Plextor to produce a higher end in terms of construction, features and performance. Take a look at the reviews on the Plextors and general drive comparisions and you'll start to notice some of the cheaper drives (ie: LG) don't hold up to the more expensive competition... especially is various performance/consistency tests.

Got an LG CDRW and a Pioneer DVD-ROM, both of which are bulletproof - excellent drives that didnt bust the bank

Also, beware sony and philips *shudders*

yes i hear the sonys are actually liteon 165s.

how is the pioneer? does it read semi to badly scratched cds unlike the liteons?

Dunno, cant say ive had problems with anything really in the Pioneer, even moderatley scratched media, but i take that as a sign of the evolution of CD/DVD based technology (my newer CD Walkman for example is much less choosy about scratched CD's than my 10-Year old hi-fi)
